First of all i’d like to clearly note out that i don’t support General directories one bit, they just lead to spam and in massive levels, and at some point they get really really greedy, such as dmoz, now there are infact a handful of general (web) directories that would probably serve as a good resource to users but they will go under the hammer because of dmoz and the ongoing trend as well.
The whole purpose of directories were to provide information on webservice (websites) for any niche or a specific niche if its a niche directory, and over time as people saw it as a profitable yet easy niche to nail they started to make directories on a daily bassis as far as i know there are at least 6 new directories every 2 days and this is just at digitalpoint, now if you look at the everyone on the net from every region who knows how much spam is being created by the second.
DMOZ went through de-indexation then re-indexation for very different reasons as Alive Directory, now we all know google favors dmoz so it wasn’t considered spam or an un-authoritative site while being indexed, but the dupes and the 301 forced google to devaluate dmoz from its former glory and authoritative state, it is infact being re-indexed now but i would doubt that a link from dmoz is gonna be worth the trouble anymore, after all it is corrupt and to a certain extent that its fairly unreasonable for dmoz to have such authority.
Someone commented on my post on dmoz earlier saying:
That’s an odd comment… it’s a directory of websites, not a phone book, so we list URLs, not phone numbers. If the webmaster wants his address and telephone number on his website he can put it there
Next somebody’ll be chastising buses for not having wings.
To explain that, YES directories are there for URLs nothing more but if you see the same URL with the same Description on more then 4,000 directories…now thats taking it a bit too far, and these general directories encourage just that.
Yes, directories are for URLs the url has to be the same, but when you submit to too many general directories with the same info you do risk your site as well as the directory. Now when it comes to niche directories they are still in the green because they are being relevant they really don’t have anything to worry about aslong as they keep on accepting sites that are related to their niche, i’m not talking about borderline relation to the niche here, please keep that in mind.
I’ve said it alot of times that links play a major role in indexation but thats not always the case, if google does rate you high on your niche then you will get a higher indexation rate on your site and it will be pretty noticable, relevancy is kinda like directly proportional to quality, so just keep on being relevant to your niche and things will be just fine.
So, as far as i can see any general directory that is selling links (paid links) is in the redzone and on the verge of being de-indexed because :
- It is selling links..
- It’s a General Directory (no niche specified)
- Any site that pays gets in.
- In most cases people use the directory category structure sql dump, freely availble at directoryspy, so that means most general directories have the same categories too..
- Now to further mess up serps these general directories submit themselves to other general directories in the web-directory category… (spam promoting more spam).
Now the selling links factor can be looked over if the site produces quality results but when a site accepts just any site into its index, then theres a problem.
Thats all for now, be more relevant to your niche, for some people : Make your mind on a niche already..
