Better Blogging - Communication Skills

By Ahson Rafiq in Blogging, Internet Marketing, News, SEO on 25th October 2007

Starting up fights or disputes with other blogs always creates alot of link love for both parties but specially for the one that started the whole mess, not only that but you also get alot of content boost at google as well , now lemme make this clear, anyone can pick a fight , a few know how to handle themselves through it , this post is aimed to help you learn this really tricky tactic to drag in traffic and links.

Now, every blogger comes around these situations where they get caught up in the moment and want to stand up for almost any cause that pleases them and without thinking about their position in the market (public image) they jump in with a bat and start swinging at big timers , and forget their true object which was traffic and links and more attention, this is when things get messy, see bloggers young or old, male or female , they all start as beginners and untill they start making some sense , they remain in the learning stage , I say if you can convince yourself to do something then you can convince others too if you try hard enough , so you must be asking yourself “where the hell is this going”, I’ll tell ya, earlier i talked about Using Trackbacks to increase interactivity and more communication between blog owners on different issues and how trackbacks lead to intense debates on controversial topics, anyone can start a fight with a blog owner, but you need to know how to handle yourself and not end up looking like the idiot with the big mouth in the end, here are some tips to save you that you might want to remember before going in head first…

  1. Pick a side and stick to it , if you et into a debate with someone in order to get some link love and attention towards yourself from a bigger blog , then know what you are standing up for, do the homework, and don’t you EVER stray from what you are standing for, don’t go changing your position on the subject at hand , that shows weakness. See, the thing is, whether right or wrong, both sides have pros and cons almost equal to the other side, you have to look at the pros of your side , if you loose sight of that then there is no point in trying to start fights with others or even to state your opinion for that matter.
  2. Respect and Relevance , just because this is a fight (debate/dispute/arguement) does not mean you have to “represent” , be respectful, you have to respect the blogger you are confronting if you want him to respect you even the tiniest bit in this tactic , be relevant to the case at hand , don’t go off into the blogger’s history unless its statements he/she made that conflict with the case at hand , if you start a conversation on “Pagerank and its importance” and end up talking about “Dmoz Corruption” , then you may need to pay attention more at whats going on here.. The whole point of this exercise is making relevant content on both sides and having enough traffic going between both blogs to benefit both blogs specially the one starts this chain reaction. By respectful, i also mean no bashing and/or offensive language to be used here , if you have a good point you won’t need the harsh language (although its fun if you do use it, but resist temptation - make that point no. 2.5)
  3. Finally, finishing the debate on the lighter side and leaving off on good terms, take this part like leaving with saying “lets agree to disagree” , if you really know what you are standing up for in that conversation you’ll have just as much good points as the opponent has for his side , and I’ve come to believe that all debates are ties if both sides truly believe in what they are standing up for.

If you really do this the right way, you’ll end up with more responsive traffic to your blog as well as alot of links coming in from different places , if you act like a smart person with insight on a wide variety of topics, people will want to take up those debates with you as well.

Rememeber one thing, don’t pick a topic you won’t stand up for yourself in the first place.

Pick a fight? Wouldn’t that ruin the credibility of owning the blog in the first place?

  2. Gnet Says:

Not really, picking a fight is putting the matter im discussing a little to harshly, what i’m saying is if you have a difference of opinion with a valid point, blog it! :D

  3. Rudy Hernandez Says:

It’s more about expressing your opinion and stating your argument than “picking a fight”. Simply disagreeing with what someone says can sometimes bring a new reader to your blog if they happen to also agree.
