Will Wikia Search Ever Launch?
By in Webware on 26th December 2007Last year in December was when Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia announced they would be launching a human powered search engine and calling it Wikia. Wales said that the results would better than Google or any of the other search engines because humans would make a better quality decision.
Since the announcement of the human powered search engine others have started their own approach to designing one. Maholo was launched in May of 2007 and is already showing quite a growth pattern.
Google has also announced their own version called Knol just this month. It’s clearly a direct result of being annoyed by the Wikia Search announced last year. Wikipedia refuses to advertise Google ads across their pages adding to the frustration of Google.
Will we see the launch of Wikia Search before the end of this year as Wales promised it would be last year? It depends on who you ask. A few days ago a report was published in an IRC chat that proves Wales is wanting to hold good on his promise for the end of year human powered search engine, with it in a private beta version before being released to the public sometime in January 2008. But if you ask the CEO of Wikia, Gil Penchina, as to an exact date of the launch, he simply says that he cannot comment on the timing.
Many internet users are waiting the arrival of Wikia Search so that they may judge for themselves the search results that will be created. The idea of human powered search engine results is something all internet users are interested in, but the final value of Wikia will be decided by actually using it and not by what people hear about it in the news.

well there’s quite a few innacuracies in this article. knol isnt a human search project but it is more like a rival to wikipedia, allowing users to create “knowledge pages”. also the project is well underway and the private pre-alpha test has already been released and is now in use for testing etc. Jimmy also said that the public release date is set for January 7th, 2008. think thats about it for now, but you may want to see this blog which has more accurate info - http://searchwikia.wordpress.com

Well, I can certainly say it’s a good idea but it feels sort of like StumbleUpon. If it’s going to be human powered, I’m expecting a voting system.

I’m looking forward to it, but I’m not expecting anything too revolutionary. I don’t honestly think it will be able to compete with Google.

It would be interesting to see how this would turn out, but Wikia will never be able to match up to Google. Google is experienced, and I like their simplicity. They’re also planning on launching Google Knol, which I think will definitely be better than Wikipedia.

Great idea, however his this article just goes to show how much you should NEVER reveal your product until it is live and the idea is legally yours.
