5 Tips that will boost your SERPs!

Jan 31st 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

I wouldn’t blog about it if i hadn’t tried it myself, in the last few days i was experimenting alot with nofollow on links and my post/page titles and i wanted to see for real if i had got any positive response from google, and i finally got enough facts to prove that this does help!

No extra chunks in titles

If your page is about “Free SEO Templates” then let it stay just that do not end it with your site’s name like “Free SEO TEmplates - Site Name” that not only spams your own serps but would jeopardize your ranking on “free seo templates“. NOTHING more then what is relevant.

Nofollow 90% of the site

I don’t believe in “selling seo” but i do believe in product integration and relevant products for the targeted traffic, so thats why the main objective you should have while selling/buying links on your site should be purely traffic, the more you buy/sell links to manipulate search engines the more they will pick on you.

Continuance of topics

Every niche has several number of topics involved so don’t stop at just one, make more content on the neighboring topics, if you have the following pages on your site interlinked between each other then they will boost each others rankings no backlinks needed.

  1. Basic SEO
  2. Intermediate SEO
  3. Pro SEO
  4. SEO Book
  5. Learning SEO
  6. SEO in 5 steps

Constantly update your content

Let me make it bold so that its very very clear even if its a static page or a post on your blog if you want to mantain a serp ranking - constantly update the information on the post if there is some more info out there. SERP rankings are determined by the end user’s satisfaction count as well if people just go to your site then google it again and select a different serp then you stand to lose a ranking!

Using the H1,H2 and H3 tags

The header tags carry alot of importance as well think of it like categories then sub categories in your blog

H1

- H2

- - H3

So think of it like this, break your page into 3 headings within the content :

  1. H1 - Learning SEO
  2. H2 - SERPs and basics
  3. H3 - Further into serps

You get the idea :)

From now on i’ll try my best to post my income here from this blog and the tactics i use to boost it every now and then, these Blog income reports will be at the end of every month. This is the first amount of money that this blog has ever generated.

Ad sales

  1. 4 - 125×125 banners sold - $80
  2. 1 - in post banner sold $20
  3. 3 reviews sold - $170
  4. Misc ad sales - $106
  5. In-Post ad - $90

Adsense got me nearly 10$ only this month, but then again im not quite targeting adsense that actively on this blog.

This totals at $470

not bad for a first month of earnings.

stumblematic-explode-your-traffic-with-automatic-stumbles_1201568057281.pngLast night Aaron Nimocks sent me an email with his new website StumbleMatic and sent me a free pin code to use , just to give the site a whirl and maybe review if it i like what i see there.

Basically its a stumblebot which is conntected to 200 accounts it will stumble any url and review it too at the same time, its not based on the “completed in 24 hours” rule, it happens right infront of your eyes, all you need to provide is 1 url 10 tags (which will be alternated) and 10 reviews (alternated as well).

I used this service on my vista themes site today and my traffic sites are as below, looks pretty darn effective to me, stumble upon is the most used social bookmarking tool on the net today as said in a survey at problogger hehe.

10 Ways to Make Money Blogging

Jan 28th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

This was kinda long overdue so here it is 10 ways you can make money from your blog.

While building up this blog i was not hoping for a decent income here soon so building it up was my first priority after the traffic and readers kicked in then it was time to start monetizing and I’m only half way through doing that, there are so many things i can add here that can make me decent money but theres a time and place for everything, right now this blog is earning around 200-300$/month which is not bad since this is its very first earning month and yes I’ll be providing a earning report at the end of the month as well.

So lets get started..

Direct Ad Sales

Direct ad sales builds up 70% of my revenue and its really important that you have a advertisement page on your blog that explains what spots are available on your blog and how they can buy ad spots on your blog. Direct AD sales can be banners/text links/sponsored reviews anything that you want to sell on your blog but some of the most used sales are as follows

  • Banner Ads
  • Text Link Ads
  • Sitewide links
  • In-content Links
  • Rss Ads

Email Marketing

If you are using feedburner’s email subscription feature then you will have a really good list going on that has subscribed to your blog’s update this list can be used to promote either your products or affiliate offers its just like buying a list of 100k emails from a forum but only this time the people receiving the email have subscribed to your mailing list by their own will. You can either use gmail (which i prefer) or go to Aweber. This is a really good way to promote your affiliates, you can get atleast 1-2 sales per email (to all) if you have the right product for the right traffic.

Remember, if you are selling water to the thirsty its a fast sale but if its consolidation loans…well then you need to be re educated..

But it doesn’t stop there, let’s say you run a webmaster blog where you post about webware and other webmaster related topics such as cms and themes, you can now offer email advertising packages to your advertisers where you get a relevant product and email it to your subscribers!

This may seem a bit slimy but we are talking about strictly making money here..so to get through the month you’ll need to do this, specially if you are a new and upcoming blog with little reputation, you can worry about your rep when you have one. ;)

Ad Networks and Affiliate Networks

If you are a tech/sem blogger then you’ll be getting offers from either new ad networks , affiliate networks or product sites that have recently launched an affiliate section to their site and wnat you to promote it, I was reached a couple times by ad networks and was told that i’d be given 20$/month just for putting their ads on my site, that was really easy money!

Once again, I’d like to pressure the fact that you need to keep your blog highly relevant to your niche if you want the money to keep rolling in, the more off topic you go the more you confuser your readers, advertisers and potential readers.

Reviewing your own affiliates

Well sponsored reviews aren’t the only kind of reviews out there, if you want to get some extra juice going around the blog just review an affiliate product of your advertiser, earn some extra cash and add some new content to your blog at the same time, two birds with one stone!

That’s how webhost review blogs got started, they reviewed the service then linked to the site with their affiliate ids, they really pay good!

I actually did that right before this post, look at my review of How to be a rockstar freelancer

Turn your passion into profession

I’ve mentioned this point several times in my posts before, if you have a passion for something online then do it on your blog, show it off and make some money off of it while you’re doing that mine is wordpress themes and i tend to design a new theme every now and then and add it here, that not only gives me some extra link love and traffic but also potential wordpress themes clients that want unique themes designed for them as well!

If you want to do something similar then find what you like doing the most and do it, people can tell if you are passionate about something or not in an instant so don’t force yourself to like something, just be yourself, its easier and cheaper.

Teach!

Ebooks are famous you may already know about the “How to be a freelance rockstar” by freelance switch that has got alot of attention now and continues to grow in every way for the blog and the brand name its a really good move!

If you have enough supporters of your methods of promotion, blogging, marketing or whatever the topic at hand may be, then its time to write an ebook with 10x more juice then your blogposts things you have never mentioned on your blog and then some would be in the ebook, thats another easy way to make money because people love to learn and ebooks are the perfect way of doing that.

Writing an ebook as a “product” of your blog is not only good for sales but for your blog as well people who “can’t” buy the book will simply subscribe to your blog and you’ll get more traffic that way!

In an effort to promote the blog more i also offer a free seo book here which has several great tips!

Using Sponsors and Competitions to make some extra moola!

If you are running a contest powered by a third party sponsor then there will be alot of traffic coming in as well as links that means motivated and relevant readers this is the time to increase your ad usage on the blog and also bulk up on affiliate reviews and advertising your feed this way you don’t only earn more but you get more feed readers as well.

Sponsors help you setup competitions, competitions drive traffic to your blog.

Now its your job to successfully run the competition while trying to make that competition work for you on a personal level as well, because you have to lookout for the well being of your business/blog not only the competition.

Just before this post i recieved an email from seonoobs - a request to be their sponsor for their contest, if you are wondering how to reach out to a blogger for a sponsorship, then this is how:

Hey there!

I just wanted to make you aware of a big SEO contest I’m having, and since you’re involved in the SEO industry, I thought it would be awesome to have industry specific sponsors. There are already some great prizes, but the more the merrier. Anything from a product sample, to reviews, consultations, to cash - it doesn’t matter. Just you being apart of it would make it a memorable one!

You can read more at the official contest post here.

If you’re interested, let me know as soon as you get time, as the contest kicks off on February 4th.

Thank you for your time, and have a super week!

Ryan L.

SEONoobs

Network Blogs

If you already have an established blog which is at a level when you can advertise at any site you want successfully then its time to start another blog form another niche and advertise it partially on your main blog, I’ve done the same i started 2 new blogs when i saw the opportunity and i advertise them whenever i get the chance (whenever im not researching for blueverse).

Its important to have blogs on different topics, the more you spread yourself the more you’ll learn.
For example my free vista themes site is doing amazingly well considering the work i put into it its above average.

Selling your advice

Do people like your tips?
Have you proven yourself as a successful marketer?

Then people do want your advice, you can either sell a full consulting package or just brief advices based on what you see for a small fee, small money = small advice

And that could fuel your blog’s content as well, its like killing 3 birds with one pebble..

  1. Extra cash by selling teaser advices as posts - and a link to a full consultation package
  2. Blog content
  3. More readers!

Even SEOMoz has a Q&A section where the readers ask questions to rand and the whole team, more interaction, more content and more readers!
This is one of the easiest methods of making money blogging that i know of!

Sell your niche

If you have a really relevant website with targeted readers then you can diversify in so many ways, if you are a blogging tips kind of a blog then you can make a jobs board where people come and post their jobs and pay you a small one time for a limited post on the board, this is a good way to make money because your advertisers are looking for targeted and motivated users to be driven to their site and if you have a really targeted audience then you won’t have any problem doing this.

A jobs board isn’t the only idea i have here, here are a few..

  1. Top 10 Sites/Blogs of the week - bidding directory style
  2. Blog of the month
  3. Classifieds
  4. Community with a premium membership option
  5. T-shirts
  6. CDs
  7. Posters
  8. Content Packs
  9. Case studies

..etc

You get the picture. ;)

How To Be A Rockstar Freelancer E-Book Review

Jan 27th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

How to be a rockstar freelancer is written by Cyan & Collis Ta’eed, they blog at Freelance switch which is a really great blog for freelancers and people who live for the pursuit for money! :D

I bought this book around a week ago and just finished it and i have to say this book really puts things in prospective for a webmaster specially me, specially its finance management part which is the part i was really impressed of, it effected me because i don’t really manage money that well or at all for that matter.

The book goes over the simplest and the most complicated parts of freelancing and making money online while keeping your life intact, most freelancers or new webmasters tend to over do it when they start out and it completely ruins their personal lives and health. This book goes over time management as well and explains how you should manage your time between work and play time.

How to be a rockkstar freelancer is a one step how-to book for anyone looking to make a career online. The reason i love this book is because they haven’t left anything out at all not even the little things such as how to manage your online career and real life job, when to quit your job and how to handle a full blown business when you have made it!

The things i learned from this book are:

  • How to manage money
  • Branding
  • Distributing time between real life and online life
  • Spending money and saving it
  • Having a budget
  • Handling clients (multiple clients at the same time)
  • Caring more about health
  • Diversifying my interests in a better way

The ebook was a really good way for them to get more subscribers too, when i went to Freelance Switch i instantly subscribed to their blog and actively started reading it.

A week ago i reviewed SEOMeter and at the same time i added my own blog to it well i got the results now:

At the time i added my blog there were around 3-5 new posts everyday which justifies the really high start off point right after i decided i’ll be the only one blogging on this blog from now on since i have more time now.

Google doesn’t crawl depending on your backlinks and/or authority as far as i’m concerned its either the crawlable links on the frontpage or the rss feed that pings google and lets it know for the new posts.Either way this blog is doing pretty great!

interviews.jpgJason Mosley from MrbaconPants answered a few questions for this week’s Saturday Blogger Interview!

Do you blog offtopic? like other things then tech?
Yes all the time. I try to tie everything with bacon and/or beer.

Does offtopic blogging help you?

I think it dose. I feel if I blogged about the same topic I would get
bored with it. I don’t want blogging to feel like a job. I want it to
be fun and creative. Also its help me to gain a bigger audience, for
example if they don’t like tech I am sure they will enjoy my other
topics.

Do you ever directly insult another blogger in your posts?

Never! I will give my honest opinion about a blog or website but I
don’t think I am ever insulting about it. We are all part of the same
community so for the most part bloggers should be friendly with each
other.

As a techblogger what do you prioritize traffic or commentors?

Traffic, without it you don’t have anything. As long as people are
reading my content I’m happy and making money. If someone happens to
comment, I’m even happier.

Where do you look for inspiration or ideas for new posts? other blogs?news sites? tv?

Life, I just sit back and reflect on my day and usually a topic will
come from that. Sometimes I will read my Twitter feed and yes other
blogs to get the creative juices flowing. I recently wrote a post
about this here.

Does rss readers matter to you?
Yes, the more you have, the more dedicated your readership is.

How important is seo to you?
To be honest I really don’t think about it. I think wordpress does a
good enough job by itself with it. I do get a lot of traffic from
Google but I feel that links form other sites give you better quality
readers.

Would you rather go for adwords or seo?

SEO, it’s free!

For monetization would you go for CPC or CPA?

I only offer direct advertising on my site and they pay by the month.
It makes it easier for me because its less reporting and things to
keep track of. I could probably may more doing a CPC or CPA method but
it would require more work.

Targetting Multiple Keywords for the Homepage.

Jan 25th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

At first i was only targetting the keyword “SEO Blog” somewhere along the line i got greedy and i wanted to target my homepage for Blogging Tips , Make Money Online and Freelancing Tips as well - This goes against my siteplan for this blog to begin with but then i started thinking what if.

What if i can rank well for all 3 keywords and still keep the site relevant, as far as i know if i do all 3 there will be a fair bit of irrelevant content on the site for some visitors, my rankings at the moment are:

This one really took the piss out of me..

shoemoney-serps-script_1201208589546.png

This one was fairly easiy ;p

shoemoney-serps-script_1201208602593.png

I started targeting “make money online” last night so yep it still counts

shoemoney-serps-script_1201208619296.png

This one was easier then i thought

shoemoney-serps-script_1201209326375.png

Since my blog is technically a pr6 and i have a butt load of authority for most serps i can easily get into the top 20s or 30s but the top 10 spot is what im most interested in!

Here are a few of my aims to keep in mind while targeting multiple keywords for your home page.

  • Make sure every keyword you are aiming for has a link to the category page or post page, with relevant content
  • Links from relevant sites
  • In-content links (link love/mentions)
  • Alot of on-site seo - Meta tags/Titles/Descriptions and even 301s
  • Must have sufficient support from social networks for each keyword (diggs..stumbles..etc)
  • Unique and creative content - your content must be above average if you are trying to rank for something big

Thats all i have for now, subscribe to me for more updates as i get them! :D
