Blog. Like anything else, is all about substance, or in techspeak, content. How do you entertain a readership who has such short attention spans and even shorter memories? This is not meant to offend any of my readers (Fine people, with vast intellects) but it is a well known phenomenon that the attention span of even the most intelligent person drops significantly whilst surfing the net. Read about studies on this phenomenon here . Therefore it is sometimes a struggle to keep coming up with eye-catching material, often on a daily (if not twice or thrice, daily) basis. Looking at the various tipsters and dedicated web sites provides a huge and conflicting body of the kind of self help guru stuff which is bundled up together in a ghastly book entitled ‘Ten Top Tips of Successful Bloggers.’ (This, if I can find a publisher, will be on sale soon, folks.)

There are people who will tell you to Think Like a Blogger and whilst this is a good idea, it does require a definition of what a blogger is, and that is where this article departs from the rest of How To’s in general. I don’t really think too much about what I write, I tend to surf, in a very broad area, read a few articles until an idea occurs to me, and then I write what I think. In other words, I am an opinionated person, and my opinions form my blogs. It is that simple really. Obviously there is a certain amount of linguistic competency needed, as well as some panache of delivery (or not as the case may be.) In general most blogs that I have read, which I consider to be ok, are well written opinions of something, be it Music, Technology, Alien Abductions, Whatever. Is it something you get better at over time, yes, of course. Is it something that you need to have an affinity for, well yes but people can learn to blog. The real question, is how useful are articles on how to blog, and the answer is very grey, it is useful to learn others opinions, because whether you agree or disagree with what they say it will give you something to write about. How much use the actual advice is? This varies very widely and what people tend to forget is that we are a very diverse breed of people, made up of significantly different life experiences and inspired by very different things. What works for me (writing in the nude, no only kidding!!) may not work for you. Therefore we come full circle, opinions matter, and the more well formed your opinion, the better the blog. Ta Ta for Now
