Most Overlooked SEO Tips to Get Your Blog Optimized

Comments (6)By Mary Stage in Blogging, SEO, Webmaster on 23rd January 2008

First off, let me say if you are using WordPress, read the must have WordPress Plugins for 2008 that Gnet wrote about in an earlier post, I spent some time today working on a new WordPress Blog and I found these plugins very easy to implement, thanks Gnet for telling where to get all of them!

Okay and now on to the SEO Tips to optimize your website. I know that there are more experienced SEO people out there, but these are the tips I’ve found that are most overlooked by webmasters and bloggers today.

Link Building should be done on a regular basis. No matter how you go about getting links to point to your site, keep adding them. Regular new links will always be more appealing to Google and other Search Engines if you acquire them over time instead of all at one time. Building Links is often thought about in the beginning of websites and blogs but tends to drop off after some success has been seen. Don’t forget to keep building your links to keep your site the most optimized it can be.

Anchoring text is often done using the same word over and over again. Google likes your site better if you can link to different variations of the keyword you are using. If your linking to other pages and articles in your blog, practice anchoring to many forms of the keyword you are actually targeting. This will always help you to rank better with search engines. A good example of this was used above, where I linked up “Building Links” to a post previously written on BlueVerse instead of using “Link Building” as the anchor text.

Don’t forget to go bold! You don’t have to go crazy with it, but adding the tags around the keywords you are trying to rank for whenever you can will play a big part in the optimization of your site.

Like I said, these are just the tips on what I think is most often overlooked as you get more involved with your website or blog. For a more in depth look at SEO and strategies you can use to optimize your site, download the Free SEO Book.

SERPs as an Adwords Supplement

SEOmoz.org - Learn From SEO Experts. Become an Expert.Lately I’ve been reading alot about adwords in my feeds, to start off i’d like to make it perfectly clear that i have never used pay per click advertising (except for once where i was just trying to burn some money) at the moment I’m not really keen on spending money on google or any other payper click ad network.

Its important to know your traffic sources and to know which you should choose, as for me I choose SEO since its free and i get to have whatever i want over a certain amount of time without spending that much money. SERPs are usually how i promote my sites, ranking for better keywords and getting traffic for it as well.

If you think about it most of the traffic you receive at your site from adwords is from google search anyway, and thats only the 10-20% of the people who actually care to look alll the way over there for sponsored links and the rest just go with the SERPs. Now think about it, wouldn’t you rather spend $0 and be in the 80-90% clickable area?

Getting good rankings is not hard as long as you take care of a few simple tasks.

 1. Link Exchange with similar relevant sites
 2. Make sure your site is interactive ( to make sure you keep the visitor you get )
 3. Use your keywords wisely (dont spam your site with loads of keywords of different niches)
 4. Use other of your similar sites to get some link love
 5. When linking to inner pages use the keyword you are targeting for that page not the general overall keyword for the site/homepage
 6. Make sure all your content is unique
 7. Submit/Update sitemaps frequently

Wouldn’t you rather Optimize your site to earn more rather then spend money on adwords?

5 Things bloggers and interent marketers can learn from college life..

Working and Studying at the same time is a terrifying experience, you can learn loads from it! :D

Be on time!

Whether its blogging or updates on your site you must be on time because your visitors are expecting updates at that certain time if you are late or skip a day you’ll miss out on alot and the next time you are back you’ll be clueless as to whats going on and what are the latest happenings.

Schedules are also important if you have made up your mind to make 1 post per day then you have to follow through, you must have a no-excuse policy!

Pay attention!

When you are working you must pay attention at what you’re doing and make sure you are covering all aspects of the job at hand and also the more distracted you are the more hasty your work will be and its obvious to everyone else but you that the work you have just finished was done in haste and lacks that extra influence that got you where you are today in the first palce.

Work Hard!

Don’t kid around while working, define your workplan for the day and attack it like a wild bear!

Its okay to have a few laughs while working after all you are you’re own boss but if you do it alot you will never get any work done and at some point might even like to kid around more then you actually work. If you are a blogger then you need to make sure you are right on course with your daily work plan and are up to date with your upcoming tasks.

Diversify

Never put all your eggs in one basket always try new things or at least make the effort to learn new things.

From a SEO point of view, you should never go offtopic on your site if you have a good thing going, it can ruin your serps but that doesn’t mean you can’t start a new one with a whole new niche, thats something i recommend all bloggers “Diversify!” if you currently run a personal “make money online” blog then start more blogs on other niches, make a whole network!

Get enough personal time.

Its really important that you get enough sleep and exercise as well as time to socialise with the people around you just like internet life you need to socialise with bloggers and internet marketers whether its a friendly chat or a joint venture. Its important that you manage your time wisely and don’t spread yourself too thin yet be an all around person!
