Blogging Platforms

By Mary Stage in Blogging, Webmaster on 8th February 2008

When people begin a blog, the first blogging platform they are introduced to is either Wordpress or Blogger, but there are many other quality blogging platforms available for users to choose from.

You may have started with Wordpress.com as a new webmaster who didn’t want to pay for hosting but wanted to get your information online in a hurry.  Many new bloggers start out with a free hosted blog but soon find out why other people don’t use them.  It’s much harder to monetize a site that is hosted on Wordpress.com because they want to run their own ads on your blog.  That’s understandable, they need to make money somehow to pay for the gazillions of blogs they are hosting for free.

Then as you progress into hosting your blog on your own domain name, you end up sticking with the Wordpress blogging platform.  There are many others available that are just as easy to use and we are inviting you to check each one of them out for yourself to see which one is right for you.

Here are two other great blogging platforms you can look into:

Drupal

Drupal is a free blogging platform and CMS that allows a single user or a community of users to publish , organize and manage website content with ease.  There have been many great websites created with the Drupal software.

Joomla

Joomla is a CMS (Content Management System) that allows people to build websites and blogs  and take care of their management tasks with ease.  It can be used to add content and images, update product lines, and taking reservations.  Joomla offers an easy to use browser-based interface where you can easily add new pages and create an unlimited amount of sections on your site.

One of these open source Content Management Systems may have more of the features you are looking for in a blog atmosphere.

Check Blueverse often for the other blogging platforms that are available for free, we will be bringing you new ones regularly.

Actually in my point of view drupal is a more ‘techy’ type CMS system but ultimately more configurable and programmable than Joomla. Joomla is a little more user friendly and ‘point & click’ based plus I think has more modules although a little more commercially based - I prefer Joomla but that is just because my programming skills are not much.

For a beginner I would definitely start with blogger. You can immediately apply for an adsense account. After graduating I will still stick with wordpress despite the choices. It much easier to use.

I find Joomla to be a junk pile, in all honesty. Drupal is a far superior CMS feature wise and administration wise to Joomla.

When i was beginner, i was also introduced to wordpress. But now a days,i`ve two blogs and both are hosted on blogger. I think blogger is quite better than wordpress.
Thanks for sharing new blogs with us. As i already know about Joomla,i`m going to try drupal.

I like blogger because of the direct adsense hook up. Also, Drupal is far more superior then Joomla. Drupal may be more”techy” but it is way better in many ways. And lets face it the Drupal design is just so cool :)

Thanks for your input on this guys, I was hoping you would make your comments about the blogging platform you liked the best.

I prefer Blogger over these, mostly because it’s free, has unlimited bandwidth so you don’t have to worry about traffic surges to your blog, and you can put advertisements on it if you like. I like all the Wordpress features, but right now I don’t have the money for hosting if I want to put advertisements or customize my Wordpress blog. I believe though that if Wordpress ever allows users to put advertisements on their blog, they’ll get a lot more users to their online blogging software.

Drupal and Joomla both seem like a bit of an overkill. Course I guess it depends on the kind of blog you plan to have and whether you want to offer other free services like you do here. They install easy enough, but they have a steep learning curve to get it where you want it. I would say that those are for more advanced users of the net.

When i tried to set up my own blogging site, i was a bit over ambitious, i decided to build my own blog tool, but alas it wasn’t a success. Wordpress was what i ended up using and in my opinion, anyone interested in blogging should use it!

Wordpress and Blogger are more strictly blogging platforms. Joomla and Drupal are more CMS.
I think that first two is better for blogging and the other two for building a website, maybe containing some elements of a blog.
I also think that first two platforms are more user friendly and the other two are more complicated. Of course Wordpress has so many plug-ins that you can change this blogging platform in whatever you wish, but I think that platforms like WP or Blogger are better for blogging than CMS.

You’re very true that everyone starts on Wordpress.com
but wordpress is just for blogs and the others you said [ joomla, etc ] are cms.
    its hard managing a cms.
    thanks for the post

Joomla is not so easy to learn . It is like html very tricky and hard . New bloggers start at wordpress I think , because it is easy . Also thanks for providing some info.

Well.. I don’t usually think “Joomla” or “Drupal” the instant someone says “Blog”. The first thing that comes to my mind when someone says blog is wordpress/ blogger. Joomla is just too much for a blog, esp. in its initial stages. People wanting their blogs to be like CMSs might prefer them. But, wordpress keeps getting better all the time.
