As you've said, this could be caused by idle subscribers not really checking up your feed. But then again, when a large number of subscribers get removed, I wonder if it's really a idle subscriber miscount. I mean, 50/300 is 1/6th right? It wouldn't be so strange if it happened in the course of the weekend. But it's really weird when it happens right in the middle of the week.
