Another Brick in the Blog Monetization Wall – In-content Text Links

05 March 2008 - By Ahson Rafiq - Filled in Blogging, Make Money Online

This was posted by Daily Blog Tips earlier but i felt like i had a few thigns to say about that type of advertising..

Personally, I think its a bit like pushing the envelope if you are doing all the other methods of making money with a blog that I’ve mentioned but non the less its a good idea, it offers deep “inner” links to an advertiser’s blog, its more link text links but they run sitewide so it does have its own benefits, although i wish the best of luck to the guys at DBT, I am somewhat skeptical about this one because i see more cons then pros..

  • The links are second last on the sidebar, so the visibility is shot..
  • DBT might penalized for selling text links, its a 50/50 chance since those are direct links but they do have a nofollow tag on them so it puts them in the grey area
  • Advertisers (55% of them) are usually looking for that icing (seo value – do follow) on the cake (normal links) so it might be hard to sell them that because of the nofollows..
  • Irrelevant links might cause DBT’s relevance powered authority to get revoked, I’ve seen cases where despite the nofollow tag, sites got the penalty

As far as In-content text link advertising goes i would rather prefer adbrite’s in-content link, although its invasive since you have absolutely no control over the links in your content but you still get paid enough to not mind the invasion of links, since those links are generated by a javascript and go through a tracker rather then a direct link to the end-advertisers it helps you avoid any penalties but it hurts your reader’s interest.

Any efforts you make on monetization on your blog, you must at-first think of your readers, how would it effect them? would they turn away because of way too much ads? would they still click the ads and still browse the advertiser’s site?. This is what i was thinking at the start of my blog when the traffic was booming and i was only thinking of monetization and not about how readers would react to all the conjested ads, its 2 months after I’ve started monetizing this blog and now I’m being more careful of where i sell ads and who i sell it to, a funny fact is that you should never sell ads to a competitor who’s infact running against you, like those John Chow ads that are like “Make Money Blogging , I’ll teach you how to make money online” whereas I am trying to do the same, so thats a no to conflicting ads to, I don’t want another fortune mag confusion on my end :p

Relevance is a huge matter with readers, as long as the ads have something to do with the topic at hand they would not mind it and even click it to give the site a look-see but if you are advertising totally irrelevant things just to get a chunk of cash then your blog’s lifeline would be cut in half.

Like everyone, I’m looking for new ways to make money with my blog, so far I’ve made money with Private Ads and Product sales for the last 2 months, for this month I’ve stepped into affiliate sales, which i will be further explainging in my post on “Serp Powered Affiliate Sales“, subscribe to me for the instant update.
