Microblogging – What is Microblogging?

Microblogging is simply the form of posting small pieces of content on the Internet. There are websites that are dedicated to microblogging. A couple of these websites are Twitter and Jaiku. Microblogging is usually done from a mobile phone or instant messaging device. This makes it quick and easy to post a short statement or question while promoting your blog(s).

There are benefits and disadvantages that are attached to microblogging. As this concept is fairly new, it still is not perfect and this is where the disadvantages come into play. We’ll save that for last though, let’s get into the many benefits of microblogging.

Microblogging is a great addition to your current blog(s). You can encourage readers to check out one of your latest blog posts by providing a short description of it with a link. This is to be done using websites that are devoted to making it possible to use the art of microblogging. The character limit that Twitter has put into place forces bloggers or anyone posting a message to get their point across real quick. This helps to show your readers what is going on and assures you that you don’t lose their attention. You can also allow your readers to keep tabs on your current projects by posting updates that use microblogging to get the point across. You can also use microblogging to provide a link to interesting content that is available via the Internet.

Twitter can be rather useful for SEO as its Google pagerank at the time of this article is 8/10. Just to throw in some information to those that are interested, the Alexa rank for Twitter at the time of this article is 591. How can you benefit from the pagerank of Twitter? Many of the user status pages receive good pagerank as well since they are provided with a URL in the form of http://www.twitter.com/username. If you want to build your brand name, which most bloggers love the opportunity to do this, using a microblogging website like Twitter or Jaiku is a great way to do this. Not only will you have the possibility of gaining more readers from them finding you on Twitter or Jaiku, you can also encourage your current readers to read your blog posts more often.

Do you get stumped on what to write at times or do you wonder what your visitors are thinking? Microblogging is a great resource tool that you can use to overcome being stumped on what to write or to find the information that you are seeking to put into your new blog post. By asking questions, you are encouraging reader interaction and can also learn new things from your readers.

There are a few disadvantages that are attached to microblogging, this was brought up at the beginning. Let’s get into some of the disadvantages that you should be aware of when using Twitter or Jaiku to take advantage of the various benefits of microblogging.

It has been shown that not using the art of microblogging rationally can hurt a blog. This could be very little or could lead to severely hurting your blog(s). Also, certain websites dedicated to microblogging like Twitter are known to lack the ability to be completely reliable as far as uptime is concerned. Their have been known problems when multiple users are microblogging at large conferences for example. Also, people have posted numerous spam posts and posts that contains unimportant information which adds to the saturation of microblogging.

As you can see, there a quite a bit of great benefits that you can take advantage of simply by taking part in microblogging. Sure, like everything else in this world, it has some disadvantages. If you’re serious about utilizing new ways to improve your blog(s), this is definitely an option that shouldn’t be overlooked.
