Interviewing Patrick Altoft from Blogstorm
Brief Intro about yourself?
My name is Patrick Altoft, I run the UK’s largest SEO and online marketing blog, Blogstorm. I also run a medium sized SEO company.
How did you get started?
I started blogging as a way to add content and generate links to a few affiliate sites I was running at the time.
Do you run your blog under any “Media” type site? Like I run mine under the control of Gurilla.net
How long have you been blogging?
Since early 2005 although for the first year my content was pretty boring and was just content for the sake of having content.
Whats your strategy with your blog in general?
Get as much traffic as possible and the rest will fall into place. Also don’t show any adverts.
How do you get rss readers?
I make people think that they would be worse off if they didn’t subscribe to my blog.
Could you tell me, in as many words as you can, what made you stand out in blogging?
I tend to write much better content than 90% of the other SEO blogs on the web. That is quite hard but if you can manage it then you are onto a winner.
Do you give out freebies?
No but sometimes people send me freebies.
Whats your opinion about the importance of PR in a blog’s life?
PageRank is totally unimportant, the only numbers that matter are traffic. Public Relations, another kind of PR, is very important however.
Do you consider the top100 list at 45n5.com as authoritative?
There are lots of lists and the same names always come up at the top. All the lists use different metrics but I think in general most of them are fairly accurate.
Any thoughts on my post on Blogs are not the authority, the Bloggers are?
Sure. People read blogs to hear what the man behind the blog has to say. Take Shoemoney for example, people read his blog to hear what he has to say about stuff.
Would you sell out your blog at some point?
No, it makes far too much money in terms of new clients to sell.
What’s your take on sponsored reviews?
I think most blogs would lose readers fairly quickly if they did lots of reviews. Having said that it’s a great way to get the word out about new things and we often buy them for clients. We only buy them for traffic not SEO and always get nofollow links though.
What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?
A tip that’s easy to use and makes their lives better.
Did Aweber play a vital role in your growth?
No, I’ve never used it.
Could you give me a statement for everyone using the feedburner hack here:
It doesn’t surprise me that it can be gamed. Anybody can game it by just adding email subscribers. It’s still the most valuable metric though.
What would you prioritize? Content? SEO? Traffic? Readers?
Traffic and content. If you can get the traffic and show them good content then the battle is won.
Did you ever consider selling links to those underground link sellers, you know, the ones that mail you and ask you to sell in-content links and pay per year.
Never. I value Google traffic and don’t want to get a penalty. I never recommend people use link networks, if you want to sell links do it privately.
Did you ever get an offer of selling your blog out of the blue, if so how did you react to it?
What are your thoughts on my free wordpress themes here, be as blunt as you can.
They seem pretty good to me.
Overall what do you think of blueverse, once again be as blunt as offensive as you can.
I think its good, personally I would ditch the ads until you have a few more readers.
Any tips for my readers?
Get on digg as many times as you can before they ban your site.
