I personally believe that first impressions are most important as it's that first impression that will cause you to leave and never return. Not only that the free ones have someone else's name at the bottom. Having a custom desines wordpress theme can be very expensive. However I have found that you can find some really good premade themes that don't advertise someone else's name for pretty reasonable amount of money. So my point is I'd rather spend a little bit of money on a nice looking theme because the look and feel of yoru blog reflects greatly on what people think of your blog. i.e. whether or not they trust you and/or are willing to make a purchase from you.
