Just in case you’ve been living in a dark cave, hibernating for the last 3 months, I’ll fill you in on one of the hottest things in the Make Money Online (MMO) space right now. It’s making money from Twitter. Big MMO like John Chow and Shoemoney are making thousands per tweet. Crazy…I know!
Of course most of us peons with smaller Twitter follower counts won’t even come close to that, but what about a $50 spot for a sponsored tweet? man…. twitter is brutal. It seems like you need a pretty established website with regular viewers on it already for it to make any money. I tried it on a brand new blog, but I still couldn't gain any actual converting traffic.

SponsoredTweet or Ad.ly seem to be the leaders right now….Its always good to have two companies working for you, so you should sign up for both, however I have heard many stories that people who have registered for a month now and have not got any tweets.

The reason people use Twitter is the same reason Twitter stays out of your way (and pocketbook). There are hundreds of equivalent services (stumbleupon, friendfeed, identi.ca, facebook has had status updates for years) that offer the exact service that twitter has (usually more) and it's *really* easy to switch: users have nothing invested in Twitter's service, just the 30 seconds they took to setup their accounts. Limiting third party applications would kill the very community that makes it popular.
Twitter isn't the only company that can keep a database of sentences. There really is no business model. If a carrier wanted to make use of a Twitter-like service and Twitter made them pay they could erect their own service in a second, or just use another of the many popular existing services.
The only *real* option Twitter has as a company is to take this service as a complete loss on the books, start a company that does something completely orthogonal (some ad based social site? e-commerce?) and use Twitter to market it.
