If you read either Shoemoney.com or JohnChow.com, you’re probably aware of the little brewhaha they have with Invesp.com. If you’re not up to speed, the quick and dirty story is invesp.com started an informal survey last year of the Top Online Marketers of 2008. They give you a list of nominees and you vote for your favorite. They’re running it again this year for 2009.
Of course it’s just a great link bait idea and really serves no purpose other than getting traffic out to their site. I don’t think the winner gets anything except some bragging rights (emphasis on “some” since this thing holds no real value).
Well, Shoemoney and John Chow (who are both on the list of nominees, btw) decided to vote up a guy who goes by the name ZK and get their blog readers behind it. ZK regularly comments on their blogs and sounds like a decent guy. Without their backing, he likely had zero chance of beating out the other big guys in the Internet Marketer space. They each created a post on their blogs saying “let’s vote this guy up and make him win”. Harmless enough…right?
The result? ZK CRUSHED it. He was winning by an absolute landslide. Until Invesp.com decided to intervene. Now whatever their reasoning or motivation, it doesn’t really matter. They really can’t come out looking good from this situation and it further drives down what little credibility their “survey” had in the first place.
Which leads me to some points/observations:
1. Rule #1 for EVERYTHING you do: Be honest.
I’m not saying Invesp.com is intentionally being deceptive, but their actions don’t look good. Just let the guy win and enjoy all the traffic you’re getting from 2 heavy hitters having a little fun with your survey. I’m sure they’re pissed off because they feel the results are falsely skewed. Whatever. It’s a two-bit survey that doesn’t mean anything…who’s whole purpose is to get you some free traffic and inbound links. Is that really worth your integrity being compromised? No way.
Personally, I think integrity and honesty are two traits the Internet Marketing space could use a little more of. There are lots of shady people out there who want to make a quick buck. Don’t be one of them. Don’t even flirt with the line by being partnered with someone on something that is shady. In fact, don’t do anything that even looks shady. You get the point.
2. Don’t piss off the big guys.
Sure Shoemoney and John Chow are not the end-all be-all in blogging or Internet Marketing, but do you seriously want those guys and their readership who tend to be VERY loyal to them and what they have to say upset with you or think you’re jacking with them? Why not play nice and get them on your side. You’ll be a lot better off in the long run.
That said, nothing is worth compromising on #1. Even if that means pissing off the big guys.
3. Remember the “little people” and help them out whenever you can.
The real winner, either way here, is ZK. That guy just got some serious exposure that I hope helps him tremendously. I love that Chow and Shoe both got behind him.
As you grow in your experience, knowledge, success, etc., every step along the way there will be people newer, smaller, less experienced, etc. than you. Look for opportunities to help them out whenever you can. Remember we all had to start somewhere and just because you’ve made a 4, 5, 6 figure check in a month from your efforts, doesn’t make you better than anyone else.
Pay It Forward (I loved the premise of that movie).

Time magazine had the same problem two years ago.
A bunch of guys in Ireland decided to nominate an unknown soccer player (at Juventus) for the Man of
the Year Award.
The thing went viral and, you guessed it, he won!
Time freaked out and disqualified the votes.
This kind of stuff happens all the time, sadly.
Ivan.
December 10th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
This is an amazing story and worth savoring for a long time. I however wonder if Invesp ever even thought that these two heavy weights would do what they did!
December 10th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
I have also seen that post in which they were requesting for vote.. i think this is against rules
December 10th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Yes it definitely was a mistake to intervene in this contest. Sure such contests results can be skewed by efforts like this, but did it really matter who won the contest? If anything, invesp should've been spreading the news about how 2 bloggers helped get ZK the win. Or perhaps they are extra sneaky and foresaw how their intervention would create even more buzz about the contest. It got us talking it, didn't it?
December 10th, 2009 at 5:52 pm
yea, well this situation made me believe that I will probably never deal with those survey/poll things, which have the purpose of ranking top *whatever* man/woman/person. It's easy to manipulate results, and if you penalize the manipulation it can then have negative effect on your own credibility.
Some things are better not to be touched
December 11th, 2009 at 4:19 am
I don't know why some people poke their nose between others way of success. If the guy doing effort to get traffic for his site so why Invesp.com is intervening. It's really a deceptive act.
December 12th, 2009 at 11:30 am
This is nice and informative information. I like the rule most is be honest whatever you do.:)
:0
December 12th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Yea, you would be surprised how much pull Show and Chow have on the internet. I would put money on those two guys any day.
December 13th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Somethng similar is happening here in the UK at the moment with our music chart.
In a bid to stop on of those horrible pop idol people getting the number one slot, people are being urged to buy Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name song to put a giant middle finger up to Simon Cowell and the music industry in general.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Reading your post is never a waste of time for me. It's so inspiring. Thank you for sharing such meaningful observations you got.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
The thing went viral and, you guessed it, he won!
December 14th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
This happens all the time, I remember one year that Mankind…Mick Foley was voted as the man of the year – same thing occurred. Winner was going to be on the cover, but Time decided to disqualify all votes or something similar. Its hard to predict who truly deserves these awards when voting is not really controlled.
December 15th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Those are good advices. Maybe not really revolutionary but good. And I would add to that: to gain success work hard, because there is no profits without investing first.
December 16th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Yeah, honesty really is very important. And since we are dealing with people online and not on a face-to-face basis, it will be a bit difficult to build your credibility. Honesty is a great way to build your credibility. I also loved the paying it forward scheme. We should really do that more often in our lives.
December 16th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Yes… agree with you…"Be Honest".. but in every rule there is always an exemption.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:07 am
Everything you do ,do it honestly ,I also believe in this and work according to this.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:15 am
Reading your post is never a waste of time for me. It's so inspiring. Thank you for sharing such meaningful observations you got.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Looks like it backfired pretty bad. It serves them right for not being transparent with the rules. Now that the big guys decided to take advantage of the loophole, they're going to interfere.
December 17th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
be honest is essential in every business not only in business but our entire life and
i wonder if there is any stupid crook want's make confrontation with shoemoney. i said that because i'm one of shoemoney loyal reader, shoe is a great person and share many useful thing for his readers.
December 18th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
If the guy doing effort to get traffic for his site so why Invesp.com is intervening. It's really a deceptive act.
December 19th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Your comment"….just because you’ve made a 4, 5, 6 figure check in a month from your efforts, doesn’t make you better than anyone else." is very apt and people somehow do not understand this. If we can drop the "better" or "worse" and be happy with "different" life will be much pleasanter.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:03 am
Interesting post! I like the way you prescribed. It's a good advice to every one. If every one always be honest then there in no problem in this world.
December 21st, 2009 at 11:43 am
Funnily enough, they could have well thought that had not the two heavy weights intervened, for whatever reason, he would not have got anywhere near the winning post!
December 22nd, 2009 at 9:41 am
i think this is against rules
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:38 pm

Yes.. i like the Rule "Be Honest"…. Honesty is the best policy.
December 23rd, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I agree that honesty should be at the forefront of everything you do online. It's builds credibility and trust, and without that; you're not going to get anywhere very much…
-Max
December 23rd, 2009 at 10:57 pm
I hadn't heard about this until reading your post. Haven't been to chow or shoe in a while. Sounds to me like it was really stupid for invesp to intervene but you're right that ZK is a winner either way. You must remember the little guys and you never know who they might have on their side!
December 24th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Interesting Post ! You have done it well. Thanks for sharing with us.
December 24th, 2009 at 6:01 pm
To be perfectly honest, who rally gives a rats about this anyway? Will it make money for anyone? I doubt it. But it sure gets all the posturing, prancing wannabes out yakking about it!
December 25th, 2009 at 5:45 am
I Like Honesty, Because Honesty is the best policy and we should be honest at least.
December 26th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
You're right in the sense of this being a whole link baiting exercise and the survey holds NO real value. I dont know why the survey guys intervened, but I'm not sure about your comment of 'not upsetting the big boys' – sometimes you dont have to!
December 26th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
that's great advice from shoemoney
be honest is essential for every business
December 27th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Good story
Keep it coming
You cant beat honesty.
Thanks
December 28th, 2009 at 2:56 am
I also check some view about this post
December 28th, 2009 at 6:24 am
I honestly was thinking this exact same thing. At first I was a bit wigged out, but in the end honesty prevails in this world. Great Post
December 28th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Another great post! I don't think I can handle all of the great posts on this blog, but you guys really do a great job covering the latest topics and trends here. Keep up the awesome work!
December 29th, 2009 at 9:00 am
Great advice i really appreciate your work so much thanks for sharing this post with so much.
December 30th, 2009 at 10:38 am
I am agree with you all rules.
December 30th, 2009 at 11:59 am
The post has given very good idea from the inspirational ideas. That can be a true thing to do.
December 30th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Interesting post! I like the way you prescribed. Thanks for sharing
December 30th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
I think the idea was great…..let the little guy win….if the majority thinks he should then he should. end of story.
Just because the big guys are big doesn't make them right all the time.
South Carolina Mortgages
January 1st, 2010 at 8:21 am
Haha, I reckon it was hilarious the stunt that Shoemoney and John Chow pulled – I only heard about it yesterday and spent lik 30 minutes straight reading all I could about it.
But I totally agree with what you're trying to say.
January 1st, 2010 at 4:07 pm
i think this is against rules
January 2nd, 2010 at 6:54 am
It's amazing how much authority those two guys have in the online marketing community. They are like the president of online marketing. Anything those two guys say, people will listen and do as they tell them to do.
January 2nd, 2010 at 7:18 am
Honesty is important. This amazing story tells you everything from honesty path to giving respect to those guys who already achieved something in the same field. Having said that, it is a fact that majority will not practice honesty and look for shortcuts.
January 2nd, 2010 at 8:30 am
This is an amazing story and worth savoring for a long time. I however wonder if Invest ever even thought that these two heavy weights would do what they did! – but you need to consider all the perspective first
January 2nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm
This is nice and informative information.
January 4th, 2010 at 5:50 am
Yup, I against this too. Maybe I need to go with my own style
January 4th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
Seriously, Invest should just be quiet and enjoy the traffic. Who cares if their survey results were skewed? It's not a heavy duty poll. We're not electing a President or anything.
January 4th, 2010 at 2:35 pm
There are is a site in holland called geenstijl that did the same, there was a chip factory in search for a new name for potato chips and geenstijl voted for there name and all there members, but the chip company admitted there mistake but made the chips. so your right always be fair. it gave them a real big boost.
January 4th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Yes it also happened with the NHL all star ballot. The all star game was being held in Montreal. So Montreal fans undertook an effort to get their players onto the team. They did so with automated voting software though. So they had reason to disqualify those votes. In this case, they should've just let the contest be. When you are leaving the contest up to a public vote, you have to be willing to accept the results.
January 5th, 2010 at 6:18 am
Undoubtedly, Honesty is the best Policy. These things happen all the time but such success or fame does not last long, its shortlived. It has dire consequences.
January 7th, 2010 at 4:40 am
They are just lucky… hahahaha
January 7th, 2010 at 4:59 pm
I think that online, you need to build trust; and to do that, you need to be completely honest.

January 8th, 2010 at 2:41 am
This is why public polls are difficult to do in the internet especially if you're a big site–ivan's post made me realize that Time has had to deal with this at least twice.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:46 am
yes, i'm agree with you !
January 8th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
They were just trying to help out ZK and why not? do they really need another award? do they need more recognition, better to feature new talent and get more Uber Affiliates out there.
January 8th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
i agree with "skin surgery" 100%
January 9th, 2010 at 12:04 am
As humans we should have consideration for people, honesty is something rarely found on persons today. I always admired honest persons, and thats the key to suceed on life.

Best to ensure your reading the content with understanding and not just by viral effects, like in this case some are driven by her say and by our own judgment. It's a lesson to learn! Be honest and be Vigilant with this kind of stuff.
January 11th, 2010 at 2:25 am
Update on the 'Rage Against the Machine' U.K. music charts battle…Rage won, decisively. The difference with that, and this, though, was that the Rage campaign was grass-roots; one women and her hubby made a facebook group, and the thing just exploded! There was no 'celeb' behind it.
January 11th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
this is just all about internet marketing strategy and the one with the best strategy wins..
January 13th, 2010 at 6:36 am
I am very interested, it is true goodness and honesty of each person must take precedence, because it can build a very good personality
January 13th, 2010 at 9:21 am
I guess the good thing is that ZK wins, that's the only way Invesp's survey-"fake-like" be honored. Like I always wanted to do, I like the thought of helping smaller people, just like in the internet marketing. Btw, nice story.
January 13th, 2010 at 11:01 am
Great rules. I like the Rule #1 most. Rule #1 is really true.
January 13th, 2010 at 11:51 am
I started getting involved in affiliate marketing a couple of months ago, but I feel like I am jumping all over and not getting anything accomplished. I need an actual affiliate marketing strategy that I can follow step by step. Does anybody have a good one to follow? I am willing to pay some money for a program or tutorial.
January 13th, 2010 at 2:48 pm
Reading your post is never a waste of time for me. It's so inspiring. Thank you for sharing such meaningful observations you got.
January 13th, 2010 at 8:07 am
When Schoe and Chow both get behind you, then you are always going to have maximum exposure. These guys are amongst the top ones in the Internet Marketing world. You are right, honesty and integrity will make you even more successful. That has been a really enjoyable and informative read. Great post.
January 13th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
This is nice and informative information. I like the rule most is be honest whatever you do.:)
January 13th, 2010 at 10:37 am
This is a wonderful post. Though I question if Invesp ever even thought that these two would do what they did.
January 14th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
fark ran a vote on naming the new seaworld orca and pushed it viral to the point where the name "Mr. Splashypants" won. They ended up disqualifying the vote.
January 16th, 2010 at 10:58 am
sohbet,I`m almoust sure that this is against the rules.
January 16th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Yes, you are right. It's against its rules.
January 17th, 2010 at 4:55 am
To be a honest person is not possible at all times, some times it should our self only
January 17th, 2010 at 9:25 am
It's really nice to hear that the big guys are helping out the little ones. Thanks for sharing.
I loved Pay It Forward too!
January 17th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
This is so true. Never lie to people as that is bad business. The A-List people will easily shut you down with a plot.
January 18th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Could I just quickly point out how invesp's logo is a clear rip-off of the Sega Dreamcast logo? Thanks.
January 19th, 2010 at 4:49 am
Integrity and honesty are traits that we really need nowadays. Everyone starts from scratch and it's nice never to forget that when you're "doing big" already. Your feet should always stay firmly planted on the ground.
January 19th, 2010 at 4:55 am
Love the "streetsmarts" advice on marketing. I love reading stuff like this versus the "salespitch" type advice I often come across which always seems biased to a specific marketing e-product. Your advice is well taken.
January 19th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Honesty is the best policy…….always
January 19th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
What is a vote… its a public opinion….when people voted for ZK…. i dont understand why invesp had a problem….if they wanted to control who wins and who loses…they shouldnt have kept the voting in forst place. this is so unprofessional of invesp
January 19th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Honesty and credibility are interlinked… and going against rules is always bad!
January 19th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
hahaha @ dont piss off the big guys.. Classic!
January 19th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
My first exposure to blogging was through a friend who showed me JohnChow.com, thus gave me an insight if what blogging can do for you. I am still a newby and learning as I go, thanks for the info.
January 19th, 2010 at 11:29 pm
Its easier to loose trust then too gain it, always be honest and you never have to look back
January 20th, 2010 at 4:08 am
Great story. It's easy to get shady online and it's always good to be put in remembrance of rule #1. Always provide things honest in the sight of all men. Thanks.
January 20th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
I however wonder if Invesp ever even thought that these two heavy weights would do what they did!
January 20th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
True, Pay It Forward this is the term I am reading second time for today. I absolutely agree with you here that we’ve got to be honest about what we do online and help others along the way because blogging world is also a community, you never know when u need someone so it’s better to build good relations with everyone without compromising your principles and befriends with big guys or guys who’ve just started.
January 21st, 2010 at 11:21 am
Honesty is the best policy and more so, strangely enough, in business. Honesty always pays well in the long run in business.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:38 pm
I wonder if they will bother with the list again this year!
January 21st, 2010 at 4:16 pm
I strongly believe that the Rule #1 For Everything You Do is to be honest to yourself. If you still keep lies to yourself their no satisfaction in any work that you are planning to do
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:07 am
The advice you give here is not just relevant for Internet Marketing but rules which people should live through in their business and personal world.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:06 am
Oh!!This ideas may create some sort of revolution in the every day business stocks…
January 22nd, 2010 at 1:29 pm
I think that online, you DO need to be honest, instill trust and build credibility. I think that being deceptive and dishonest won't get you very far at all.

You seem to have just copy pasted my comment my friend!
January 23rd, 2010 at 10:08 pm
yeah this is a great story!! and the tips you've mentioned are great!!
I might underline the fact to be 'honest" is the number one "to do" thing in life!!!
January 24th, 2010 at 7:38 am
I think honesty is the most important thing in human relations. It is the foundation of everything we share.
January 24th, 2010 at 11:45 am
It is right!
January 24th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
I must say that this is just all about internet marketing strategy and the one with the best strategy wins..
!!!!!!
this is important!!!
January 24th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
In my opion be honest is the right word .
January 24th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
This is why public polls are difficult to do in the internet especially if you're a big site–ivan's post made me realize that Time has had to deal with this at least twic
January 24th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
Surveys and polls are incredibly easy to game, and will usually just serve up the obvious regulars. It's like the NBA All-star selection with fan voting. It's refreshing to see a new name get rewarded for once in any case, I'll certainly be visiting his site now.
January 24th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
Well I believe that everything you do you must do it with honesty!!!
great toppic, very intresting!!
thanks
January 25th, 2010 at 5:32 am
I liked it. Mainly dont piss of with big guys. when I compare shoemoney and john chow, I think shoemoney is doing better from john chow. thats my personal feeling after all.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:43 am
Shoemoney and John Chow are my heroes.
I love your number one rule: Be Honest.
I definitely agree with that.
January 26th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
It's becoming increasingly enjoyable watching viral ideas subvert the plans of established companies and organisations – see the success of "Rage Against The Machine" becoming the UK Christmas Number One. Let the anarchy continue!
January 26th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Everything you do ,do it honestly ,I also believe in this and work according to this.
January 27th, 2010 at 10:59 am
Really your post is very inspiring! I think this line is very impressive "Remember the “little people” and help them out whenever you can".Thanks a lot for sharing such a useful and important article to us,keep it up.
January 27th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
I don't think anyone really takes any notice of these poll things anway, but playing nice and getting them on their side is what I would have done!
January 28th, 2010 at 2:04 am
Being honest is the first step to get your things right in your life, if you are honest you will find others honest too. So be honest in your work and you will get a reward.
January 28th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Yeah I agreed! For everything we all do needs some management as well.
January 29th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
To be honest, Its still as rare a feat as it was in the time of Diogenes
January 29th, 2010 at 6:22 pm
I really love this story and really like helping people to succeed, it really is a great feeling when you can help others to succeed.
January 29th, 2010 at 11:31 pm
Amazing story, some things are better left untouched!
January 30th, 2010 at 2:41 am
you're right on the money with rule #1… nothing is more important than honesty
January 30th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
i will totally agree with your post good work and keep it up.
January 31st, 2010 at 7:26 am
Be honest ! You will be a great father or husband for your family ! I think success begin in your family. Am I right ?
January 31st, 2010 at 9:57 am
I really like the 3rd point. Take care of the lesser ones and help them up. But I really wonder if its even possible NOW in this world of ours.
February 1st, 2010 at 12:53 am
I wonder how many people think that it is against the rules? interesting
February 1st, 2010 at 9:08 am
Every one has a right to do anything if the country they are living is democratic but some time it's some people crosses the limits and so they have to be honest.
February 2nd, 2010 at 7:38 am
Why would they crush it? That is like committing blogging suicide. At the end of the day if people voted for this guy it should be. Just because it was receiving a little backing, it does not make the voting invalid. Oh what a competitive world the internet is. Handy tips BTW.
February 3rd, 2010 at 11:33 am
very true… HONESTY is the BEST POLICY..
February 3rd, 2010 at 8:24 pm
Internet voting… one of these days we'll learn that it is flawed – until then we'll have people gaming the system.
More power to those who can game it too! they've earned it.
February 4th, 2010 at 5:12 am
You have shared good pieces of advice. I do agree 'Honesty is the best policy.'
February 6th, 2010 at 10:31 am
Definitely handled badly. I could understand if there was some serious prize or money involved maybe, but all this to change the results of some bragging rights contest.
Stupid.
February 7th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Your comment"….just because you’ve made a 4, 5, 6 figure check in a month from your efforts, doesn’t make you better than anyone else." is very apt and people somehow do not understand this. If we can drop the "better" or "worse" and be happy with "different" life will be much pleasanter.

That is a win for the little guys if you ask me! And for Chow and Shoemoney! That is what we need more of in this world. Those on top helping up those on the bottom that are out there working hard to make a name for themselves. Kudos to ZK, Chow, and Shoemoney!

I can understand them removing ZK from the survey, but I'm sure they also new kicking them out would get themselves a lot of attention and spark debates such as this.

This is an amazing story and worth savoring for a long time. I however wonder if Invesp ever even thought that these two heavy weights would do what they did!

Excellent post.By being honest and sincere you are also building your reputation. In online marketing all you have is your reputation and you can only make money when your visitors trust you.

I honestly wonder if they got more exposure by blocking ZK. If ZK had won, the contest would've generated some exposure due to the way the bloggers helped him win. On the other hand, screw the guy over and they get much more exposure for being controversial.

I always see this kind of thing happening.. Polls online and in magazines are usually manipulated with the winner being whom they wanted all along.. great blog post anyway.
