“Guru Status” = The Ultimate Selling Tool

09 March 2010 - By Ryan - Filled in Internet Marketing, Make Money Online

I was reading a post by Zac Johnson (check out his blog at ZacJohnson.com) last week titled ShoeMoney System: One Month Later & Why It Works, and was quite honestly a little baffled by what I read. Zac was giving his two cents about the new ShoeMoney System that opened up, sold the 500 seat max within a day, then opened back up about a month later for those still interested in joining.

As it turns out, Zac joined when it was originally opened up. This isn’t necessarily a big shocker. For those of you who don’t know Zac, he’s easily considered a Super Affiliate and has been earning money online for a lot of years. He also has several big wins under his belt as well and is a respected expert in the industry. I’m not surprised he joined the ShoeMoney System at the full $197/mo price tag.

What does surprise me is something Zac mentioned in his post: “If you are somewhat new to affiliate marketing, this is the perfect program for you. If you are experienced and already making some serious money online, it will most likely take a couple months before you see some useful video tutorials.”

“What’s the big deal?” you ask? Well, Zac, a Super Affiliate in his own right, is paying nearly $200 a month for content he really hasn’t mentioned as being all that useful for him so far. What’s more is he’s pimping the ShoeMoney System to other people. Sure he’s making money on the referrals, but I still find it interesting that he is willing to continue spending $200 every month even though the first few weeks were “pretty slow and introductory.”

It got me to thinking about the amazing power that some of these Internet Marketing gurus (and gurus in other industries for that matter) wield over their audiences. Is Shoemoney some spell casting crazy man duping his audience into buying vaporware? Of course not, but he has reached a level that transcends logic to some degree.

I’m sure Zac is correct in saying things will continue to pick up and even he will get benefit from Shoe’s training, but I still find it interesting that he’s willing to wait it out and recommend others do the same. I just think it represents an interesting phenomena that takes place in the sales process between gurus and their followers.

We see the same thing happen with guys like Darren Rowse , John Chow, Alex Mandossian, John Reese, Frank Kern, etc. All heavy hitters in the Internet Marketing/Make Money Online space that have an extremely loyal audience who have proven to be buyers of whatever products they happen to crap out that week (and I mean that in the nicest most respectful sense of the word).

All I have to say is I want to be an Uber Guru. Maybe the ShoeMoney System can make me into one!

This is a very great example of people repeating specific advice that has worked for one person and assuming it will work for everyone…..

i didn't find anything interesting in Zac blog.

  3. Ebook shop in India Says:

Is not giving 200$ a month for a product which we do not know about a big risk?

  4. Andrew@BloggingGuide Says:

Well, as far as I can see, maybe they have a connection somewhere, a bind or something. I for one would want full value for my money, I would not stick around if it's not beneficial to me. Unless, it's a friend, maybe I will. It is sometimes astounding how one can really create loyal customers. Maybe along the way there was one time that one of them really helped the other one a lot.

  5. Zac Says:

The ShoeMoney System is an interesting one… Jeremy's blog has readers of all sizes, from newbie affiliates to full time affiliates. It's hard to create a program that caters to all of them. The next best thing is to create a course and start from scratch. It works, but not in the favor of well trained affiliates.

I work and talk with Jeremy often, so the $200 a month I'm paying to access the program isn't a big deal. I'm a monthly subscriber because like everyone else, I want to see what is being offered.

Since the program is less than two months in, I gave a simple outline of what has been offered and changed since going live. Expect to see another one in a few weeks when things are supposed to get more advanced.

However… as you mentioned in the post, the "ShoeMoney / Guru" status and branding behind this program is what has made it an instant success. Only paying members and time can show it's true learning/earnings potential.

  6. Laptop Briefcase Says:

If you go to Zac's blog at all, you know it is filled with a ton of sponsored posts. So it is not surprising that he is pushing the shoemoney system. Having a recognizable name behind the product just makes it easier to sell. This is why Zac is willing to push it so heavily without seeing any actual value yet. He is all about the money. If it turns out that the rest of the shoemoney videos are also junk, he still benefits from all the suckers who spent $200/month to watch a big bald man sit on his couch and tell you how to open a google account.

  7. World Tour Guide Says:

Shoemoney is a online marketing expert and his system must have something un-ordinary to follow. I would like to purchase his system.

I see no reason why you cannot become an uberguru. You have the knowledge and writing skills, and I mean it sincerely. Just keep at it. You have a loyal following and in time, you will see the status landing up on your lap.

  13. James Mucci Says:

Sometimes I learn more from watching someones presentation, as opposed to the actual content itself. There is always a lesson and opportunity, even if the content is not all the informative. For example, one thing is for sure, as you mentioned, you learned that you want to be an Uber Guru, maybe when you reach that level, your content will always be great!

  23. vaal Says:

I think so called "Gurus" often abuse way too much the fame they might have gained and just try to sell re-hashed stuff. Some of the stuff is good but I honestly find great tips provided everywhere for free. I think the real people who make money simply don't need to sell that knowledge all that much. What gave them money should still work right?

  24. Matthew Proman Says:

One thing's for sure, this could work with anyone following this advice. "Gurus" should be an inspiration to everyone and not the other way around, especially when money is involved.

  25. Attic Self Storage Says:

Some says that if you want to be a guru first you must fail a whole bunch of times, second accidentally stumble upon something that works and tell everyone what a genius you are. :D

  28. Inner Game Says:

well, you shouldt be so surpriced, after all, many "money gurus" make money from teaching how to make money, but they get money mainly from that, i dont know you, but i find it ridiculous , most their income comes from being a guru, so who are you supoced to lern from them?will get money the same way?becoming a guru and charging for the knowledge?

  29. Photo Contest Says:

Good way to make money online ! Thanks for sharing. I know many other free online courses but this is good.

  30. Murlu Says:

It really comes down to the personal brand because I've noticed a lot of times when the "big gurus" (I hate the word Guru) launches a product, people eat it up like crazy.

Even though there may already be a cheaper, more thorough product or even a free post out there that covers the subject people will still go after items which have big names attached to them.

But yeah, it is a little flaky when people say they make money with a system but only because they're referring people through their affiliate links.
