Spam Comments: More Annoying Than Spam Email

19 April 2010 - By Ryan - Filled in Blogging

When you run a blog with any amount of traffic, especially one with topics people have something to say on, you quickly get to a point where spam comments become a normal part of your blogging life. Not a big deal usually. In most cases they’re absolutely blatant and easy to spot. And I actually find them to be a source of motivation because it means my blog is on the radar. Might be the WRONG radar, but at least it’s on someone’s radar.

There are some comments, however, that I find partially amusing, but mostly annoying. They are the ones where bloggers put in a half ass effort to try and get their crap comments through my spam filters. Many of these don’t make any sense and I wonder how many bloggers have been taken advantage of, purchasing some magical comment generator that’s sure to bring in tons of backlinks.

Check out a few of the more annoying ones:

1. “The point is to get an honest review of the Shoemoney System and whether or not the thing can actually make an average person (or anyone for that matter) money as the claims say.”

This verbiage was taken right from my blog post. What the heck?! Does this spammer think I’m a brainless moron who won’t recognize my own words?!

2. “Its a great pleasure reading your post. Its full of information I am looking for and I love to post a comment that “The content of your post is awesome” Great work.”

This is a great one. Niiicccceee and general. The big tip off are the 3 links they try and slip through the end of the comment which I simply don’t allow in comments on this blog.

3. “Can one state the lady can be only typical or the lady is usually excellent. The actual statistics discuss regarding on their own, the lady is the most accomplished women musician. Appoint some better artist compared with her there is no one. Everyone don’t must want her, however give regard where regard is actually due. A different factor can be her hair it truly is extremely vivid”

This comment cracks me up because it makes absolutely no sense. What in the world are they trying to say? Sure it’s obviously written by someone for whom english is not their first language, but aren’t they at least writing with common sense thought?!

4. “Sink wished never could arrow cautioned neem oil psoriasis different angle fight you both sides zosyn cost adopting such was actually just isn ofloxacin otic ignore mem lectra was anthian can consultation doctor deca durabolin online the phenomenon isle offshore ada and nlt study bible little bat ent soon will depend [url=http://diejjf.com/ergotamine-tartrate…”

This goes on for another 30 or 40 lines typically. Who’s brain child was this? Seriously, has ANYONE ever approved a comment like this on their blog? (btw, if you have, don’t tell me about it…I don’t want to know!)

Why do comments like these drive me nuts? Two reasons primarily. First, I absolutely love it when people post comments on the blog. I don’t care if they’re positive, negative, neutral, or whatever. One of the cool things about a blog like Blueverse.com (or any blog for that matter) is the community nature of it. We’re all in the same boat. Trying to make some money online and learn together.

When I see a comment, it’s a bit of a thrilling experience for me because it means people are talking. When I realize it’s a CRAP spam comment someone is wasting my time with, it pisses me off. Which brings me to my second big issue…they’re time wasters. I can blast through the big old long ones easily enough, but when someone puts gibberish together with a somewhat decent first sentence, I have to read it. That sucks.

All part of the blogger’s life I suppose. As my Dad likes to say, “That and two bits will get you a cup of coffee.”

For me it is ok to receive spam comments unless it is from human and not so program

Hehe, those are actually some pretty funny ones. I have my own blog and they have yet to become interesting for me. It's just a ton of link spam about bad sites like those that sell prescription drugs or casino stuff. Thank god for akismet. I personally allow comment that vaguely get what I'm talking about.

  3. Andrew@BloggingGuide Says:

lol I receive these types of comments too! And it is really irritating as well as disheartening because you've just wasted precious time in reading and eventually deleting it. Well, what others can and will do for links. I am really thankful that Akismet really blocks comments like this. I just don't know what blogs would look like with these types of comments!

  4. used tires Says:

Hehe, it always amuses me when I read comments like that. Sometimes they almost seem like they're left by spambots. And who knows, they might be, with how complex they're getting now. But at the end of the day, seeing comments with no relevance to the content of your blog is pretty infuriating as it is an insult to you and your blog.

    Till then,

  5. Anna Says:

And can it be possible to set up the spam filter in that way that it will be able to eliminate crappy comments at once? I have the same problem with my blog – I'm so Tired:((( of spammers!

  6. Bob Dooley Says:

I agree with you. I read alot of blogs and its totally out of hand how many people just get on there and say – Hey nice blog or nice post. Seriously if you have nothing to say then why bother?? Blogs are suppose to have an interaction where people discuss different things, not just say – hey nice post… So hopefully one day the world will be free of spam!!! :) Take care

    Bob

After being a frequenter of this blog reading this post had me worried something I said would be included lol. Honestly, the spam comments that make absolutely no sense are my favorite. I think someone left "this food blog are great" on one of my pages one day and we don't even talk about food…

Lastly I don't know if it bothers you guys as much as it does me, but the spelling and grammar of these spammer is terrible!

  8. Ryan Says:

Unfortunately a number of them slip through even the best spam filters. Akismet is by far the best filter from my experience. However, I regularly go through even the ones it has marked as spam to be sure something valid isn't getting mistagged.

  9. Gelbe Zähne Says:

I get those comments with 10 links in it all the time and the best thing is that I don't get one of them but 5 times exactly the same.

Never got cool ones like you got. Would love that they amuse the hell out of me.

I configured Akismet so that it also filters out comments with certain words in it. So far it is working out pretty good.

  10. Web Design Says:

Comment in 1,3 and 4 could be the work of comment bot or some kinda of auto commenting software. The contents is extract from some where else – lol.

  11. Cheap EV SSL Says:

As far as I concern, I have no problem to receive a spam comments in my blog whether it is from human not from any auto spaming softwear.

  12. Nicole Price Says:

As much as it must have irritated you, I found them amusing and could not help laughing. You have omitted another major factor of Russian spammers who keep sending innumerable comments. Luckily Akismet catches all of them.

  13. Laptop Briefcase Says:

Yes these must be very annoying to deal with, especially on a large scale. My personal pet peeve spam comments are the ones who copy and paste someone else's comment. Those can be especially tough to notice unless you have a good enough memory to know what comments are already approved.

  14. used tires Says:

Yes, and some even change little things to the sentences like grammer and punctuation here and there so it's not even noticable at first glance which can make it frustrating to locate them at first. It's definitely a constant war.

    Till then,

do you know where i have found your blog? In the list of do-follow sites :) i am sure big number of your traffic comes from such lists and most of them come here to post spams or in good case to read one of your articles and post related comment like me :)

  16. Cheap domain names Says:

I hate comment spam too (like everyone), the other day i had a very weird comment like that: "gfugefg link of his blog zgrge hihigf". I was WTF? How can they think bloggers will not delete this type of comment, they don't even try to make an effort to write a comment.

  17. Inner Game Says:

well… then i will try not to make you mad and make a good comment…

wait im sure there is something i can say…

jaja nah just kiding, i dont find spam comments so anoying , in fact i consider email spam far worst, i feel i takes more time from me, but ofcourse thats a personal opinion

  18. Rich Says:

As a blogger and entrepreneur, writing comments is part of the business. It's a prove that your site is good enough to be appreciate. In returns, visitors should make a good comment, when I say "good" it should be something related to the topic and with sense. Thanks. ;-)

  19. Anes Says:

Ya spam comments increasing day by day so that a blog owner has to work a lot to approve comments

  20. smart metering Says:

I think its not that good but it irritates you thats really fact. They just want one thing and thats why they do so but if there are spammers then there are some genuine perosns also who always read the full post, understand. learn something and then make a good comment regarding that post. And thats the best way i think to comment on any blog.

  21. Cubic Zirconia Says:

It should be strictly stoped, it is more dangerious than spam content.
