Adnan - Blogtrepreneur.com : Blogger Interviews

Interviewing Adnan from Blogtrepreneur

Brief Intro about yourself?

My name is Adnan and I’m 18 and from the UK. I’m a student hoping to start University very soon and love to find ways to make money - very much an entrepreneur in my own opinion! My biggest website to date, and one which is still growing is my entrepreneur blog www.blogtrepreneur.com. The site has over 1500 RSS subscribers and there are articles on entrepreneurship, business online, marketing and much much more!

How did you get started?

I got started blogging in February 2006 when I was looking at ways to make money online. As I was only 16 at the time, I wanted to find a way of making money from home and without me having to get a run of the mill job working in a supermarket. Blogging seemed like a great way to make money through advertising, and to show my entrepreneurial flair and to connect with like-minded people.

Do you run your blog under any “Media” type site? Like I run mine under the control of Gurilla.net

Nope. Blogtrepreneur is its own site and I havn’t formed a company or anything like that. It’s all very informal, and I don’t really have any plans to have a mother company of sorts.

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging for over 2 and a half years now - in that times I’ve seen many ups and downs, and have experienced blogging burnout but also hitting the frontpage of Digg and other popular social bookmarking sites. All in all, it’s been an amazing experience and has taught me a lot about the internet in general.

Whats your strategy with your blog in general?

Unlike many people online, I’ve never really had a strategy with my blog. This could be seen as a significant negative point, however I’ve always been a type of person to deviate off plans, and so never bother to make strategies that I know I won’t stick to! I try to crank out fresh content on the blog (recently that’s been a little more tricky), and I forge good partnerships with other bloggers, because it’s interesting and fun!

How do you get rss readers?

Releasing fresh content on a weekly basis, and promoting my content through social bookmarking sites is a great way to get RSS readers. However, if you produce linkable content that people want to talk about, that’s an added bonus and really helps to speed up website growth.

Do you give out freebies?

All of the content on my blog is a freebie, but in terms of other products, no I don’t have any other freebies. Occassionally I hold contests where I giveaway a book, but my readers (hopefully) appreciate the fact that I don’t charge them to view my content. In the future, I would like to have some form of a membership site where I charge a monthly fee to have access to some resource, but at the moment with the limited time I have, that is simply not possible.

Whats your opinion about the importance of PR in a blog’s life?

I’m not sure whether you’re talking about PageRank or Marketing here! In terms of Pagerank, it always helps to have a site with a higher pagerank, and it can be easier to sell advertising as well. However recently with the latest trend of Google slaps (and I was also a victim of this), the significance of pagerank has diminished and people are turning to other metric to measure the importance of a blog.

I’ve never really focused too much on PR Marketing, simply because most of my growth is organic and happens through Word of Mouth and referrals. I suppose I am a bit active on social media sites like StumbleUpon, however this accounts for a small percentage of blog growth.

Do you consider the top100 list at 45n5.com as authoritative?

I think Mark’s Top100 list was purely a bit of fun and a good way of sorting and ranking blogs based purely on metrics. However, branding really isn’t accounted for. At the moment, Blogtrepreneur is fairly low down on the Top100 list (number 45 as of writing), however this is mainly due to the Pagerank slap - but I think it has a good name in the entrepreneurial blogosphere and is relatively well known, and this is not accounted for in the list. I do think the list was a great idea by Mark though, and Kudos to him for launching it.

Any thoughts on my post on Blogs are not the authority, the Bloggers are?

Sorry, I havn’t read the post yet.

Would you sell out your blog at some point?

I’ve already considered selling my blog, and have nearly gone through with it 2 times. However in both cases, things didn’t work out, but I learnt invaluable lessons from both rounds of selling the blog. At the moment, I just don’t have enough time to continue with the blog, and I would much rather it be in better hands and given the attention it deserves, so if any person reading this post is interested in owning a popular blog, please get in touch with me!

Do you think people should sponsor wordpress themes?

To be honest, I don’t have an extreme viewpoint on sponsored Wordpress themes. There are advantages and disadvantages: for example, the theme producer can get some money for the work they have done by selling text links, the advertiser can get better SERP’s, but then again they are cheating search engines and could get faced with penalties if Google finds out.

All in all, it’s not very sustainable in the long term for the advertisers, and if I were a theme producer I could think of better ways to earn a living designing (eg. making a membership site for themes, making custom blog themes, etc).

What’s your take on sponsored reviews?

I currently offer sponsored reviews on my blog, and if done well, I believe they can be very good for all parties concerned. The bloggers get paid directly for their time, and they don’t have to always favour the company they review. The advertisers get to have targeted traffic browsing over their products or websites concerned, and the readers get to look at a company they may not have seen otherwise. Readers also have the chance to ignore the sponsored review and carry on looking at other posts.

I agree that sometimes there are problems concerning disclosures and bloggers writing always positive reviews of companies, but all in all, I am for sponsored reviews.

What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?

A constant stream of fresh, quality content, and maybe a free resource along the way too! Answering to comments is also very attractive to a reader (I know I should take my own advice!) and it helps to cement a relationship with the reader.

Did Aweber play a vital role in your growth?

I am yet to use Aweber on my blog.

Do you think Pagerank plays a vital role in a blog’s life?

As mentioned previously, I don’t think Pagerank is VITAL to the well being of a blog. It may help to attract more revenue, however if you are producing great content and have a quality site, then Pagerank isn’t vital to success.

Did you ever consider selling links to those underground link sellers, you know, the ones that mail you and ask you to sell in-content links and pay per year.

Yes, I have considered selling to those advertisers. However after speaking with them multiple times through email, I realised that they are trying to do me out of a good deal, and their demands are too high for me.

Did you ever get an offer of selling your blog out of the blue, if so how did you react to it?

So far, I havn’t received any out right offers to purchase my blog - if I did, I would definitely consider the offer.

What are your thoughts on my free wordpress themes here, be as blunt as you can.

I havn’t looked at them properly, but passing over them quickly (and being as blunt as I can), I would say that they are all pretty simply and don’t really offer much style to the bloggers. I’m not sure whether it’s the colour schemes that need revamping, or whether you need to include more graphics to make the themes look prettier. Your own theme for BlueVerse is very nice though in my opinion.

Overall what do you think of blueverse, once again be as blunt as offensive as you can.

I havn’t really spent much time at Blueverse, but I realize that it is a high ranking blog.

Interviewing Michael Dunlop from Retire at 21

Brief Intro about yourself?

Retire At 21 founder Michael Dunlop has shown that being young, dyslexic and a college drop out is not the end of the world. Whilst many youngsters faced with these obstacles would have turned to drugs or crime, Michael merely saw them as challenges, and his drug of choice became Online Business.

How did you get started?

I was 14 years old running a young enterprise business, I asked our IT manager to create a website and he came back to us with a FreeWebs.com website and so I decided to build my own site. After working day and night using my free trial of Dreamweaver the website was ready and I won first prize at the awards night.

Do you run your blog under any “Media” type site? Like I run mine under the control of Gurilla.net

I have been looking to do this and would say its a good idea especially if you have a lot of related websites like myself, it helps to build your brand.

How long have you been blogging?

Around 2 years ago when I realized I would save a lot of money and time by using Wordpress instead of custom building my own content management system.

How do you get rss readers?

A few things I do to increase my RSS Readership are:

- Offering Freebies
- Asking my readers to join my RSS
- Offering email sign up to RSS
- Newsletter + RSS, I decided on one of my sites to auto sign up everyone on my newsletter to my RSS and this increased my RSS readership by 500%!

Do you give out freebies?

We have done before and have had a great reaction, typically we receive our freebies for FREE. The effects of giving out freebies have been:

- Large increase in traffic
- Large increase in RSS readers due to asking them to join
- Increase in advertising sales due to increase in traffic
- Increase in brand awareness
- Increase in user participation (Blog Comments and Forum Posts).

Do you consider the top100 list at 45n5.com as authoritative?

I like the list and do use it daily as a mass RSS feed but do not feel the top 100 are in order, he has managed to do a great job, but it would be impossible to make it perfect.

Do you think people should sponsor wordpress themes?

Just looking at the effect you have had Ahson shows us we should, it helps build Pagerank, brand awareness and traffic.

What’s your take on sponsored reviews?

I love them! In fact I bought 10 reviews from some of the top make money online blogs and reviewed the results and did a post about it on my site - http://www.retireat21.com/blog/6-reasons-to-buy-reviews-for-advertising/

It has helped me build a very high awareness of my website, build traffic, PR and search engine rankings.

What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?

Quality and consistency, I have noticed a big difference in my readers response when I post consistently. They tend to visit more often to check for updates and will comment and get involved. If you have no consistency they don’t seem to bother to comment or visit anywhere near as often.

Did Aweber play a vital role in your growth?

I do use Aweber and have managed to build several large lists, my new website for Web Design has built a list of 700 in just 2 months. I then can promote products and website updates to my list.

Do you think Pagerank plays a vital role in a blog’s life?

I personally don’t let it play a vital role in my blogs life but I do know most people let it play a vital role when viewing my site. It helps readers know how much of an authority your website is which then also helps people decide if to buy advertising.

Did you ever consider selling links to those underground link sellers, you know, the ones that mail you and ask you to sell in-content links and pay per year.

How could you consider it? You readers come first and if you mess them around they will leave. The price they pay was if you worked it out around $10 per link for life! Why not just sell a link via Text-Link-Ads for $50 a month?

Any tips for my readers?

So often I get emails from my readers saying they have been thinking about building a site for a year now and want my opinion on there idea and if they should do it. Don’t waist a year to email me build your site today!

Steven Snell - Traffikd.com : Blogger Interviews

Interviewing Steven Snell from Traffikd

The image “http://traffikd.com/images/header4.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Brief Intro about yourself?

I’m a web designer and freelance blogger in the U.S. I currently maintain 3 blogs of my own and I write for a handful of others including Smashing Magazine and Freelance Switch.

How did you get started?

I got started with blogging in attempt to get some content on my site that would pull in some search engine visitors who were looking for web design services. The blog kind of unexpectedly took off, I learned a lot through the process, and now I spend way more time writing than I ever thought I would.

Do you run your blog under any “Media” type site? Like I run mine under the control of Gurilla.net

No. I keep everything at my own domains (except for my freelance work).

How long have you been blogging?

It’s been a little over a year now, probably about 15 months.

Whats your strategy with your blog in general?

To sum it up, I would say that my strategy is to provide readers with the content that they want. Everyone has different likes and dislikes in terms of content, but no one likes to see the same rehashed posts over and over again. I try to take a unique approach or go more in-depth than other blogs do. If readers like the content, everything else will follow. I do keep a close eye on traffic stats and subscriber counts, but primarily to use that as a gauge to see what readers are responding to. About 6 months in to blogging I made drastic changes to my approach with my primary blog (my only one at the time) because I was looking at the trends of my statistics and seeing that a small percentage of what I was writing was producing almost all of the results. I got more focused with my content and the results have been better than I expected.

How do you get rss readers?

Early on I got a decent number of subscribers by doing a lot of guest posts (I highly recommned this to any blogger) and by networking with other bloggers. Guest posting is actually a great way to get to know some influential people in your niche. Now I think most of my subscribers come through links and referrals from other blogs as well as through social media.

Could you tell me, in as many words as you can, what made you stand out in blogging?

Consistent effort. That’s really what it comes down to in my opinion. If someone is willing to learn and put in a decent effort on a consistent basis, building a blog is very possible. Making money from it isn’t always so easy, but getting readers and earning some recognition can be done by anyone that wants to make it happen. So many bloggers seem to give up too quickly even though they say they are in it for the long-term. Every new blogger will have struggles and get frustrated at times, but those who keep working through it and learning about what readers want will have success.

Do you give out freebies?

Not at this point. I would love to give out some WordPress theme’s or something relevant to designers and bloggers, but I just haven’t had the time to develop anything. Hopefully in the future.

Whats your opinion about the importance of PR in a blog’s life?

I couldn’t care less about PageRank. Some advertisers care about it, but I use nofollow tags on ads, so it’s pretty irrelevant. Search engine rankings and the visitors that arrive through searches are significant to me, but PageRank doesn’t always correspond with rankings.

Do you consider the top100 list at 45n5.com as authoritative?

Yeah, for the niche I would consider it authoritatibe. The blogs at the top of the list are all very successful, so it must be indicative of something. I think it was a great idea and it’s more of a fun or entertaining thing in my opinion. No blog needs to be high on that list to be successful, but there are definitely some benefits and I think it can change how some readers see you as an authority on the subject.

Any thoughts on my post on Blogs are not the authority, the Bloggers are?

Sorry, I’m not familiar with the post.

Would you sell out your blog at some point?

I wouldn’t rule it out. I have no intentions of selling any of my three blogs, but it is a lot to manage. If I were to sell it would be done in order to free up time to pursue something else. I don’t think I would ever sell just because I could get some quick money for my blog.

Do you think people should sponsor wordpress themes? http://www.blueverse.com/resources/wordpress-themes/

It depends on how they are sponsored. As long as everything is clear and up front, I don’t have a problem with it. I hate to hear about hidden or deceptive links in free themes that are distributed, so in that way I would be against sponsored themes. I also wouldn’t support the practice of having sponsored links in free themes that are not allowed to be removed by users.

What’s your take on sponsored reviews?

I’ve personally never done a sponsored review, although I have been tempted. Generally, I don’t like them as a reader so I assume my readers wouldn’t like them either. I won’t unsubscribe from a blog because of a few sponsored reviews and I think they’re a perfectly acceptable way to monetize a blog, but I think they have some negative effects as well. At some point I’ll probably do a sponsored review on a blog, but only in the right situation.

What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?

I think unique and interesting content is the best thing a blogger can give readers. That’s why most readers are subscribing and visiting. Next to that, I would say a personal connection is also important.

Did Aweber play a vital role in your growth?

I’ve never used their services.

Do you think Pagerank plays a vital role in a blog’s life?

No, not in my opinion.

Could you give me a statement for everyone using the feedburner hack here:

I can understand why some bloggers would want to game FeedBurner, but I wouldn’t do it. The main reason (aside from the whole honesty/deception issue) is that down the road you’re going to want to know how many subscribers you really have, and if you game the system you won’t be able to know for sure. I think FeedBurner’s numbers are probably not all that accurate, most subscribers skip over the majority of content in their feed readers, but at least you can compare yourself to other blogs in your niche to see where you stand.

What would you prioritize? Content? SEO? Traffic? Readers?

Content. It will lead to the other three. The right content will get you readers (maybe not right away, but with some effort), plenty of traffic, and it will even help your search rankings by drawing inbound links. I think having a search engine-friendly blog is important, but all-out SEO isn’t necessary for most bloggers.

Did you ever consider selling links to those underground link sellers, you know, the ones that mail you and ask you to sell in-content links and pay per year.

Yes. When my blog was only a few months old and right before Google started going nuts with penalizing link sellers I had a few tempting offers. What made me decide not to was the content of the ads (the text seemed spammy) and the long-term committment. Then, after the Google penalties to other bloggers I have never considered it.

Did you ever get an offer of selling your blog out of the blue, if so how did you react to it?

No, I haven’t. Want to make an offer? I guess that wouldn’t be out of the blue though would it. None of them are for sale anyway. I think my blogs are worth more to me (because of the effort I’v eput into them and the future that I see with them) than they would be worth on paper.

What are your thoughts on my free wordpress themes here, be as blunt as you can.

Wow, you have a lot! I think the meta blogger series is my choice. I like the red, white and black versions the most. Blue Verse 5 is also one of my favorites. I have a general hatred for AdSense (I wouldn’t have said it, but I’m supposed to be blunt), but that’s just a personal opinion and I think I’m in the minority there. One thing I really like right now in the WordPress community is speciality themes. For example, a theme created for an e-commerce site, for a gallery site, a job board, for a real estate agent, etc. Even sports and political themes are pretty popular. I would suggest trying something like that since you have so many general themes. Just my suggestion.

Overall what do you think of blueverse, once again be as blunt as offensive as you can.

Back when I used to have more time I followed the blog and I thought the content was pretty good. You’ve defitintely accomplished a lot with Blue Verse. I really like that you’ve made it more than just a blog. The extras give it some added character. On the subject of design, I think I liked the old theme a little better, but that’s just personal preference.

Any tips for my readers?

Keep working. When other bloggers around you are giving up or slowing down, keep moving forward.
