Nifty Online Tools & Services for Bloggers

Mar 13th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

I come across a dozen of these online services for bloggers almost daily and only some of them end up on my top list, these are the tools that make my life easier, some help me to drive traffic while others help me by providing useful stats for my blog, either way, I’m sure that the following services will prove useful for you too!

Blogrush

blogrush_1191698504296.pngI did post a bad review of blogrush long ago but after revisiting the site and trying it out again i think i can make this work, blogrush is an interactive traffic solution for bloggers, you provide traffic to other bloggers and they do the same for you the more clicks on the blogtraffic widget the more traffic you get in return, the blogrush tool has got several updates since i last used it!

This one is a must for most new blogs.

The SEO Book Training Program from seobook.com is a great idea for anyone wanting to make more money with their websites. From the expert to the beginner, everyone can benefit from the knowledge found in the SEO Book Training Program.

The book is set up so that you can learn what you want to, when you want to with cross referencing to almost every subject so that you can learn SEO in the order of importance to you. It also has many great videos to help you along the way as they know that sometimes plain text doesn’t give the readers what they need to really let it sink in, but a video can be watched over and over again until you understand what they are teaching.

Traffic, To buy or not to buy..

Mar 9th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

Thats the question every webmaster asks himself at one point where his site isn’t exactly getting the exposure it is supposed to, this is where almost any webmaster would give in to buying traffic, I know I’ve spent a few hundred dollars on traffic not ppc and from several different media types as well, every type of traffic has its own ups and downs, heres a little break down of it.

“10,000 visitors” type deals
You can find tons and tons of these deals on digitalpoint mainly if not there then try google, basicly the traffic is from those get paid to click kinda site more famously known as autosurf, the only thing you would get is more pageviews/hits on your site but remember that these are not potential readers, they are just their to view your site for 30 seconds (for some its 15) and then move on to the next one.

I won’t say that this is a bad deal but i run blogs and i need readers not just viewers, the kind of traffic these systems send you is really unresponsive, if you are running CPM ads you could earn more, although this is perfect in theory I haven’t tried GPT traffic on CPM ads. Read more

Better Blogging - Reviews Vs. Guest Blogging

Feb 27th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

One of the most used blog promotion techniques that i know of are either Guest Blogging or Buying up Sponsored Reviews on other blogs.

Sponsored Reviews

Reviews give the whole site (including inner pages) alot of exposure, and these reviews have a huge chance for a potential buyer/customer, mostly blogs/sites that are promoting their sites in order to sell something buy reviews, on the other hand most bloggers get reviews from John Chow to get more RSS readers. The main purpose of a “review” is to let a blog’s readers know what you think of the site and/or describe what the site you are reviewing is and what it does with intentions of sending them potential/targeted traffic.

Guest Blogging

I’ve done this quite alot and to be honest, Guest blogging is a great way to earn authority over a niche specially if the articles you are blogging about are highly relevant to your own niche, so not only you get their traffic but also the link juice that goes along with it, think of this as article submission to article directories but here the sites you submit your article to are not spammy and have really responsive visitors/readers.

All in all i would say better blogging constitutes a little of both, if you do too much of each it can get you into some deep waters where you might find yourself way to much into one direction either you would have high traffic and low responses from readers or alot of PR and no traffic.

I realized something i already knew while reading the teaching sells, Somewhere along the line my business model was completely based on Google, traffic and revenue wise, i depend on Google for traffic via searches and revenue via AdSense not just on this blog but on my other sites as well and every site i plan in the future has Google within my plan and holds over 60% of value of my sites, this is annoying because I don’t really ever depend on something that much that if it goes away or ends I would be in deep trouble.

The reason for this post was to show just why I am not going to depend on Google but as other webmasters take this topic is to “boycott Google” I am not doing that either I don’t depend on Google doesn’t mean i would boycott it, having it as well along with other tactics i will now take up is an addition to my traffic and that’s always a plus.

Working with Google is like working with a bot that works on pure statistics, people on the other hand are 100 times more interactive and much more responsive, Google can only send you traffic and give your page some strength, figuring how to make money online lies within your ability to engage with your readers.

Think about it like this, there are tons more ways to get traffic rather then depending on Google, John-chow was de-indexed by Google then re-indexed and de-ranked on his own main keyword and his serps on most keywords are way down low but he still continues to get traffic, why?
AdWords,Feed-readers, Email Marketing,Natural/Organic links on blogs and alot more ways! His revenue stays stable because his growth is stable as well, the blog is growing on an even faster pace then before without any help from Google.

This post is not all about Google, its about opportunities that you have and might be ignoring in your pursuit of happiness via Google.

Lets look at some opportunities that i came up with by listening to the free audio tape by Teaching Sells

  • Selling Content
  • Offering Content Based Services (still i won’t offer seo services)
  • Design Services
  • Engaging in more user based marketing tactics rather then SEO
  • A more on-hand approach to my blog readers.
  • Sell your passion
  • Marketing products to actual people rather then the search engines.
  • Focusing more on trends

I’ll be launching something regarding this soon, subscribe to my updates for it!

In business, you must focus on your customers. For webmasters, this generally means your website users. Nonetheless, networking with other webmasters can help you get more customers.

Firstly, making friends with other webmasters will help you get more exposure. The other webmasters may decide to link to you or blog about you. Generally, you want your customers and visitors to tell their friends about your website and your great services. If you make webmaster friends, then they will tell a lot of people when they choose to spread the word about something because they can post about it on their website.

Networking with other webmasters will also open up the opportunity for joint ventures. By joint ventures, I refer to when one or more webmasters work together on a project. By combining their resources, they can usually do something extra great, and it will usually help give both webmasters more exposure. One example of a joint venture is a contest.

Another benefit of networking with other webmasters is that you can share expertise. Other webmasters can give you tips and offer you advice. They might be able to give you a heads up about current events that will affect you.

Maybe best of all, if you have other webmaster friends, you can ask them for reviews. If you have a product or service, you can offer them a free trial in exchange for a review. If you already have a preexisting relationship, they will be more open to making deals such as that. Also, they will be more inclined to put effort into trying your product. Even if you do not have a product, you can have them review your website or a part of your website.

For bloggers, networking with other bloggers is especially important. Other bloggers will likely add you to their blogroll if you build relationship with them. Additionally, bloggers often make a habit of reading blogs and subscribing to RSS feeds. There is a very good chance other bloggers will regularly read your blog if you befriend them. Then they will post on their blog about a post on yours whenever they read something that interests them on your blog. This can be great promotion for your own blog.

In conclusion, if you have a great website or blog and you want to help get it to the next level, I recommend you try networking with other webmasters.

Basic SEO for Blogs - Money Bloggers

Feb 16th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

After alot of changes i have what i like to think of as the perfect money blogging SEO for blogs, since i am in the business of selling sponsored reviews and banners i need to make sure my sites are up to the standard where i can charge the best price for it and my advertisers can get the most out of it as well, so here are my steps to seo your blog.

First of all, you will need a few plugins to make sure your blog is ready for the rest of the setup.

All of the above mentioned widgets have a one click setup but ALL in one seo pack requires some extra settings that you might want to take a look over, here is my recommended setup :

65t236w-hfch.png

fshsf.pngIts good to have some kind of keywords at the end of tag or category archives, it gives the blog a better look but it doesn’t matter SE wise because i’ve added a no-index tag, you should know that getting your categories and tag pages indexed is a really bad move, it creates alot of indexable pages with the same content on almost all pages so in act of good faith no-index them then your posts and pages will be the only indexed pages from your site which will eliminate any spam flags on your site.

Permalinks are always an issue with people but the way i see it, it really doesn’t matter if you have a SE friendly url with the keywords and everything or those mysql query urls with the IDs, they are both given a SERP judging by their quality and strength not url structure, but if you still want to get a good structure try one of the following but remember i am not saying that these structures will give your blog anymore value then it already has, its just fancy urls so try to make it as short as possible.

  • /post-title
  • /date/post-title
  • /category/post-title
  • /category/post-title.html
  • /post-id/post-name

No-following links is a good move but make sure that the comments on every post are nofollowed not the post links, if you are in the money blogging business you can not be controlling the flow of link juice from your site, google sees this as “gaming” pr and selling links, you do not want to be caught doing that, so just take the no-follow off all the links - regular posts & sponsored reviews.

Registering your blog at technorati is a seriously good move, only the registered blogs are ranked on their authority system and it does give out alot of good links too so make sure you are registered at technorati before you start pro active blogging.

Choosing keywords is something most bloggers get stuck on so like i always suggest “don’t get star struck” if others are earning good on a particular keyword doesn’t mean anyone could conquer it with little or less work, every successful blogger knows the hardwork it takes to make a niche work for him or her. Break down your blog’s main topics and go with the most relevant keyword/title you can come up with, the more relevant the better, being an authority in the niche is done easily, I’ll make a follow up post about being an authority figure in a certain niche soon after this post subscribe to me for the upcoming updates.

Linking to authority sites from relevant articles is a tactic most SEOs use to get higher rankings, I personally don’t really support this because you are getting leverage from someone else’s content and sending most of your traffic to them, that might get you a good SERP but it will drain a good amount of visitors from your blog, If you are just starting out make sure to not link to any bigger blogs or sites rather just send them a trackback if you have used their content and/or your content is relevant to their’s :) that way you get a free link! and its relevant as ever!

Selling traffic/exposure and not SEO value is my aim, who ever aims to sell links in order to give their advertisers better SERPs and such is going to get penalized one day or the other the better approach to money blogging is to get a really good reader base and giving them info that they want to know, in other words relevant ads , doesn’t matter if its a review or a banner if its irrelevant to your site, your advertisers won’t get any exposure.

Deep links can help you in so many ways, specially if you have the right title structure on your inner posts and pages that helps alot in getting a decent serp, for example i removed the blogname from all posts and pages to make my posts that much more relevant and its fairly easier to rank for a serp then before!

For example; Make Money Online Wallpapers (run query) :

mmowp.jpg

Although there isn’t that much competition on that keyword but still i wanted to show you just how much better SERPs look without the blogname in them. There are more follow up posts that discuss this matter further/deeper so subscribe to me to stay updated on this :)

Basics To Video Blogging

Feb 14th 2008 - Posted by Ahson Rafiq

This is a guest post from Shannon Lily from Infected by Bugs an intermet marketing blog.

First off thank you BlueVerse for allowing me to write this guest post! I hope it proves to be useful to your subscribers and they benefit from it!

Today we are going to dive into the world of Video Blogging, we are going to dissect the very fibers of Video Blogging and offer up some great tips to getting started!
I have been asked these questions by fellow Video Bloggers as well as Newbs wanting to start a Video Blog themselves. These tips are just a few of the things that you should consider when thinking about Video Blogging.

The Camera
The first question I am usually asked is what sort of camera I use to record my Video Blogs. I happen to have a $1500.00 HD Sony Camera, this price range is a little high for most bloggers so instead I would recommended starting out with a Pure Digital Flip camera. It’s about 3 times as good as a cell phone or digital camera with a video recording option. The camera is not as important as it used to be as cameras are getting better every day in our digital world but every detail helps! As long as you have a decent one you will be set for Video Blogging!

Lighting
Lighting could possibly be the most important thing when recording your Video Blog. Just like photography the lighting when recording any type of media whether it be still photos or a movie the lighting is key! Sure there are programs out there that allow you to adjust the lighting some but it will never beat actual pre-lit lighting. Because your just starting out with Video Blogging it may be hard to get your hands on high quality light source lamps, so you can just do what I do and get yourself in a place with lots of natural daylight, daylight is the best lighting source you can have, and don’t think the big screen movies don’t use daylight as their main lighting source because they do!

Audio
The audio on your Video Blog can either make or break you. My best tips for your audio are to set the camera in a place where their is not much noise, sitting it where there is a lot of computer hum noise or traffic / w/e else their might be is not your best choice, if you have to turn off your pc while your recording that way you have no hum in the video do it. It’s imperative to get the audio right because unless you’re willing to spend about $100-200.00 on audio editing software the hum will be noticeable in your videos and it doesn’t sound good!

Video Editing
Another great question I have been asked is about Video Editing, what I use and what a newb that has no money can use. If you’re using a windows machine it comes with Windows Movie Maker which is actually a great choice for editing your videos for online use. If you’re using a Mac then Imovie is your best choice! Imovie offers lots of control over your videos and allows you to do so many more things that no other program is capable of! If you can get your hands on a Mac and Imovie to do your editing do it!
Video Blogging Time Frame
When I create video blogs I have no time frame in mind, your mind set should be I will shoot and re-shoot until I get it right, but if you have good editing software you wont have to worry about re-shooting the same scene over and over again, shoot it once and just cut out what is not pro and move on.
Planning a Video Blog
Often when people ask me how I plan out and execute a Video Blog I respond simply stating, planning is the key to a great Video Blog! If you take 10-15 minutes and just make a list even if its hand written of key points that you would like to touch on in your video the end result will be much better. You will be able to stay on focus and get your point across.
Video Blog Length
Although there is no real SET rule that you should follow, I have seen and found myself that video blogs that are in the 2-4 minute range do the best, don’t waste peoples time, give them what they want in a timely manner and you will do well. Why do you think they have those give me my 13 minutes of my life back catastrophes every day on the net?

Well I hope you all have enjoyed my basic video blogging tips and I would love to hear your comments / suggestions to help us all improve our video blogs! Just remember when it comes to Video Blogging having fun is the best part. Don’t get caught up in the thought of making money from it. Do it because you love it not because you need to pay the bills!
Comment below and tell us what you think of my video blogging tips!
